Former Hiawatha Red Hawk, Brianna Schmitz Showcasing Her Talents Well For Emporia State Track & Field Team

Competing in one or two events and specializing in those is hard enough but competing in multiple events on a regular basis and finding consistent success that is really tough and showcases a strong all-around athlete. Former Hiawatha Red Hawk, Brianna Schmitz has showcased at Emporia State she’s in that all-around athlete category competing in the Heptathlon for the Hornets track and field team.

Schmitz recently tallied 4,846 points to take third place in the Heptathlon at the MIAA Championships and the total also is fourth best in school history. The former Hiawatha Red Hawk competes in seven different events as part of the Heptathlon which includes the 100 meter hurdles, high jump, shot put, 200 meter dash, long jump, javelin and 800 meter run. At the MIAA Championships she finished third or better in four of those events, while taking fifth or better in six of the seven competitions. Brianna won the shot put with a toss of 36’02.25, took second in the 100 hurdles (15.21) and placed third in the 200 (25.98) and 800 (2:29). In the javelin it was a fourth place finish (111’03), while she finished fifth in the long jump (17’02.25) and eighth in the high jump (5’01.25).

Brianna also competed as a part of the lady Hornets 4x400 meter relay team at the MIAA Championships which took sixth place with a time of 3:52.25.

Over the course of her college track and field career at Emporia State Schmitz has competed in several events and racked up multiple top notch performances. During the recent Indoor season she competed in the Pentathlon and took seventh at the MIAA Championships and helped the 4x400 meter relay team place fourth at the same event.

In high school Schmitz was a multi-sport athlete at Hiawatha and her senior year in track and field competed at State in Class 3A placing seventh in the high jump and eighth in the 400 meter dash. She also competed in the 200 meter dash and the 4x400 meter relay at State.

Schmitz looks to finish the track and field season strong as she will compete at the NCAA Division II Nationals in Charlotte, North Carolina May 24th-26th competing in the Heptathlon.
