Onaga Buffalo, Wyatt Cordell Helps Buffs to Best Season Since 2004

Onaga Buffaloes put together their best mark since 2004, making the Class 2-1A playoffs and winning the opening round against Doniphan West, 26-13 and then making the Sectionals. In Sectionals the Buffaloes took on Olpe and gave them a game but ultimately fell 33-22, ending their season at 7-4 under Coach Mike Wilhelm in his second season as Head Coach.

Senior quarterback, Wyatt Cordell finished the year with a strong game in the loss to Olpe leading the Onaga offense with 168 yards on the ground on 19 carries notching an 8.6 yard per carry average, while scoring a pair of touchdowns. He was also 2-4 passing for 67 yards on the contest.

On the season Cordell along with his fellow seniors helped the Onaga Buffaloes claiming the District title winning all five of their District games, including three of them by a combined seven points. Wyatt on the year finished with 1,024 yards rushing on 127 carries, posting a 8.1 yards per carry average with 10 touchdowns, while going 21-38 for 421 yards with eight touchdowns in the passing game.

Cordell’s contribution didn’t stop there as he was also 2-5 kicking field goals on the year and 16-21 on extra points.

Behind a strong performance by Cordell and a team mentality the Onaga Buffaloes put together one of the team’s best years in quite some time on the football field, finishing the season 7-4 with a trip into the second round of the 2-1A playoffs.
