Standing atop the podium with that gold medal and holding the tournament is moment a wrestler strives in any tournament and to accomplish that feat at the highest level of competition in the State tournament is one impressive accomplishment.

A pair of Marysville Bulldog wrestlers capped their seasons this year achieving that goal as senior, Chris Deters and junior, Jacob Mintzmyer each won their respective weight class of 132lbs and 170lbs at the 3-2-1A State wrestling tournament.

Deters came into the State tournament ranked number one in the Class 3-2-1A KWCA rankings at 132lbs and proved that was a well-deserved ranking by going 4-0 at State to win the State title. The senior opened that State tournament up with a win by pin in 1:25 and then won by a 6-3 decision in the second round to move into the Semifinals. In the Semi’s Deters picked up a 8-0 major decision to move into the Championship bout and took the title with a pinfall victory in 1:46. The 4-0 performance at State pushed Deters to a 43-1 record on the mats in his senior season.

Mintzmyer also came into the State tournament ranked, checking in at number three in the Class 3-2-1A KWCA rankings at 170lbs and by the end of the tournament was standing atop the podium as the State champion. The junior opened State with a win by pin in 3:47 and won in the second round also by pinfall in 2:49 to make the Semifinals. In the Semi’s Mintzmyer registered a 12-6 decision win to grab a spot in the Championship and claimed the win by a 7-1 decision to win the State title. The 4-0 showing at State pushed Mintzmyer to a 42-1 record this year.

Both Deters and Mintzmyer not only had strong individual accomplishments but along with eight other Bulldog wrestlers the Marysville wrestlers earned a third place team finish at State the best in school history.
