Valley Heights Lady Mustangs Track

Two years removed from winning the Class 1A girls State track team title the Valley Heights Mustangs took a step up in competition classification as they headed to the State track meet competing in Class 2A in 2016 but they again dominated the competition.

Behind 12 medals and a total of 73 points the lady Mustangs cruised to the 2A girls State track team title winning by 24 points. Every competitor for the lady Mustangs came home with at least one medal at State track and a few with multiple.

Leading the way for the lady Mustangs was a trio of 2A individual State titles as they swept the jumping events with three different gals. Skyler Saunders behind a jump of 5’05 took the gold in the high jump, while Kayla Smith who won the 1A triple jump the previous won the 2A triple jump with a leap of 37’08.25 and Brandi Jo Roepke a year removed from the State track competition returned in a big way posting a leap of 17’07.50 to win the 2A long jump.

Smith added three more medals for herself snagging third place finishes in the 100 meter dash (12.74) and long jump (16’07), while also finishing fourth in the 200 meter dash (26.58). Saunders didn’t stop with her State title in the high jump as she placed fifth in the triple jump (34’10) and seventh in the pole vault (8’06). Shelby Vermetten again in her career tossed her way to the medal stand taking second in the discus (127’02) and fourth in the shot put (36’03.50), while Nicole Weyer placed seventh in the long jump (15’10.25).

Roepke, Weyer and Saunders teamed with Shea Manley and posted a time of 51.23 to take fourth in the 4x100 meter relay, while Hannah Musil and DeAndra Woodyard were a part of the relay team, also.

Behind a medal in every event the lady Mustangs competed in the ladies captured the schools second girls State track title, both coming in the last three years and in two different classifications.
