For the past three seasons the Hanover Wildcat football team has dominated the 8-man ranks winning the past three state championship while entering Friday night on a 43-game win streak.
That streak came to an end Friday night at the hands of the Axtell Eagles who were led by an unlikely hero in freshman Isaac Detweiler who happens to be seventh-year head coach Eric Detweiler’s son.
Isaac was outstanding in the upset win as he came in the first quarter for the injured Quinn Buessing who will likely go down as one of the top quarterbacks in 8-man history.
Detweiler threw for three touchdowns in the win while rushing for 78 yards and recorded the game-sealing interception at the goal line with less than a minute remaining as Hanover was driving to take the lead.
He had also been huge in the receiving game through the first five weeks for Axtell recording over 250 yards receiving with a couple of touchdowns, while he added a couple passing touchdowns late in blowout wins for the Eagles.
Axtell is now ranked first in all 8-man DII state rankings after the win and pending the health of Buessing, Detweiler may be forced into another tough situation Friday night as the Eagles host unbeaten and No. 5 ranked Frankfort with live coverage on 92.1 KMZA.
