Josie Weishaar

The Jefferson County North girls’ basketball team has been nearly perfect so far in the 2019-20 season and that continued Saturday afternoon as the Chargers overcame a 10-point deficit to claim their home tournament with a 58-50 win over Perry Lecompton.

Throughout the tournament JCN was led by senior Josie Weishaar who has cemented herself as not only one of the top players in Northeast Kansas but one of the top players in Class 2A after averaging 25 points per game in the Chargers’ three wins.

She opened the tournament with a 28-point outing in a 62-44 over Rossville and filled the stat sheet pulling down five rebounds while dishing out four assists and recording four steals.

Weishaar followed that up with perhaps her most impressive game of the tournament in a 63-37 semifinal victory over ACCHS as she again scored 28 points while racking up a double-double with 12 rebounds to go along with three steals and two assists.

She wrapped up the tournament with a dominant fourth quarter in the championship win over Perry Lecompton bringing the Chargers back from a six-point deficit heading into the fourth by scoring 13 of her 19 points in the final frame.

Weishaar averaged an even 25 points per game in the tournament while also averaging 8.3 rebounds, 3.3 steals and 2.1 assists to go along with shooting 24-of-25 from the free throw line in the tournament.

On the season she is averaging 21.3 points per game while pulling down 5.4 rebounds, dishing out 2.7 assists and recording five steals a night.

She has been named a first team All-Northeast Kansas League selection all three years while being named a first team all-state selection last year and a second team selection her sophomore campaign.

Weishaar has the Chargers off to a perfect 12-0 start to the year with a tough test coming Tuesday night on the road at Jackson Heights who is 9-2 on the year with live coverage on 103.9 KNZA.
