Cornelison Fuels Frankfort to Playoff Wins
Gavin Cornelison

This 2020 football season has been quite a wild ride. For the Frankfort Wildcats it started with a tough 44-36 loss to TVL foe Washington County. Yet, The Wildcats responded by winning four straight games including a big 22-point victory against Axtell that would be crucial before Covid hit the Frankfort football squad and quarantines caused them to sit out and miss their final three games of the regular season. However, as the playoffs began in week nine, the Cats were back on the field in a big way and have posted impressive wins against Lakeside (60-14) and last Friday at Beloit St. John Tipton (54-43) to keep their season alive.

Gavin Cornelison is one of three key seniors on the Frankfort squad and the quarterback has been huge the past two games. Following the three-week layoff, the Wildcats scored the first 30 points against Lakeside as Cornelison rushed for 117 yards and two touchdowns and passed for 159 yards and two more scores. Last Friday, Cornelison and company were at it again as he posted 151 yards and a pair of passing touchdowns to go with 132 rushing yards and two more scores, continually coming up with answers to every Bluejay TD or comeback threat.

While playing in just six games now this season, Cornelison has registered 29 tackles and leads the team with three interceptions. He has ran for 687 yards and 10  touchdowns while throwing for 649 and 13 more TDs.

Coming off an 8-2 season, the best at Frankfort since moving to 8-Man in 2008, Coach Nick Anderson returned a lot of talent and it has shown with a 6-1 record and resiliency this year. Cornelison had 815 yards rushing and 875 passing last year with 25 total touchdowns and has been the undisputed leader of the Cats this fall on the football field. Frankfort will continue their season hosting Lebo (10-0 this Friday night with the winner advancing to the Sub State semifinals. Frankfort lost to Lebo in 2005 but won the last meeting between schools by a thrilling 46-44 final in 2009.
