(KTNC) - In a battle of nationally ranked NAIA football teams Saturday, number-12 Missouri Valley College held off 9th-ranked Peru State College, 21-14, at Pioneer Field in Nebraska City.
Missouri Valley quarterback Bruce Reyes connected with Darrian Turk on a 54-yard touchdown pass with 2:48 left in the fourth quarter for the game-winning score. Reyes finished with 326 yards passing and two touchdowns in the game.
The Vikings jumped out to a 13-0 lead after the first quarter. But Peru State scored twice in the second period, on a 67-yard Marcus Spearman run and a 13-yard pass from Tyler Audsley to Lance Steffen.
Peru State led 14-13 at halftime, and that lead held until Missouri Valley’s game-winning drive.
Bobcat fullback Ethan Bray had another good day, finishing with 114 yards on 29 carries against the NAIA’s number-one rushing defense.
Missouri Valley out-gained Peru State, 479 yards to 269, to offset a nearly two-to-one advantage for the Bobcats in time-of-possession.
The loss drops Peru State to 6-2 overall and 4-2 in the Heart of America Athletic Conference, while Missouri Valley improves to 6-2 overall and 6-1 in the HAAC.
Peru State ends the regular season Saturday against Evangel University. The game will be played at Pioneer Field in Nebraska City, with kickoff at 1:00 p.m.
