Northeast Kansas League Hands Out All-League Basketball Honors

It was the first official year for the Northeast Kansas League and there was plenty of competition in basketball between the nine teams in the league with a pair making the State tournament this year. With the winter sports season in the rear view mirror All-League honors have been handed out.

The Jefferson County North Chargers and Valley Falls Dragons whose girls and boys teams won the NEK league titles lead the league in All-League selections.

For the Valley Falls Dragons three players earned first team, two earned second team and two more earned honorable mention honors. For the boys who finished 22-2 on the season and made the 2A State tournament, the senior tandem of Luke Burns and Ben Gantz each earned first team All-League. While fellow senior, Max Badgett notched second team honors and senior, Tyler Weishaar was named honorable mention. The girl's wrapped up their season 17-6 and had three players earn All-League honors. Sophomore, Callie Watson earned first team All-League, while fellow sophomore, Ali Brown earned second team honors and sophomore, Natalie Pickerell was named honorable mention.

The JCN Chargers had three players also earn first team All-League honors with one earning second team honors and two more earned honorable mention. The lady Chargers for the second straight season finished as 2A runner-ups with only one loss on the year finishing 25-1 and won the NEKL title. Leading the lady Chargers in the All-League honors was seniors, Jacee Kramer and Jamie Navinskey who both earned first team honors, while senior, Heather Polson notched second team honors and senior, Mallory Kramer was named honorable mention. For the boys they finished 13-9 on the season and had two players earn All-League honors; that being senior, Luke Pyle who earned first team honors and sophomore, Bryce Noll who was named honorable mention.

Horton, Jackson Heights, Pleasant Ridge and Maur Hill-Mount Academy were the other four schools with first team NEKL All-League players, all with one each on the first team.

For the Horton Chargers the girls wrapped up a strong year finishing 16-6 and the boys finished 15-7. Junior, Sarah Coversup paced the lady Chargers in the post during the season and earned first team All-League, while senior, Mariah Hisle was named second team and senior, Amber Wilhelm was named honorable mention. On the boys side it was junior, Trey Dishon and senior, Dakota Bayles both earning second team All-League honors.

Jackson Heights Cobras had four players earn All-League honors after the girls finished 6-15 on the year and the boys 18-5 on the year. Cameron Thomas lead the charge for the Cobras in All-League honors earning first team All-League while fellow senior, Cole Olberding earned second team and senior, Preston Richter was named honorable mention. On the girls side it was Jessica Keehn earning postseason honors being named to honorable mention All-League.

Pleasant Ridge Rams wrapped up the season 11-10 for the girls and 4-17 for the boys. Junior, Kelsey Carpenter leads the Rams in NEKL All-League honors with first team honors while her senior, teammate, Alyssa Crook earned honorable mention All-League. While junior, Tristan DeMaranville earned honorable mention honors on the boys All-League honors.

Maur Hill was the only other team that saw a player earn first team All-League honors as junior, Dillon Kramer was named first team after helping the Ravens to a 13-9 season. His senior teammate, Mark McDermed earned honorable mention honors, while the Avery Lewman earned honorable mention on the girls side after the lady Ravens finished 9-11 this past year.

The McLouth Bulldogs had four players overall earn All-League honors as seniors, Kayla Steffey and Nick McAferty both earned second team All-League honors. While their teammates, senior, Drew Cerny and junior, Meghan Jackson both earned honorable mention honors. McLouth wrapped up the season 5-16 for the girls and 10-11 for the boys.

Immaculata Raiders finished 4-17 for the girls and 7-13 for the boys this season and had three players earn All-League honors. Junior, Grace Parker registered second team All-League honors, while junior, Ellie Wolk and sophomore, Drew Sachen both earned honorable mention honors.

The Oskaloosa Bears had a pair of honorable mention All-League players as senior, Bryce Stottlemire and sophomore, Haidyn Bassett each earned that honor. Bears wrapped up the season 1-20 and 4-17 for the girls and boys, respectively.
