On Saturday, top seniors from all around Northeast Kansas and others from Kansas came together in Highland to showcase their talents on the volleyball and basketball court one final time representing their respective high schools, in the 28th annual Highland Community College All-Star games.

The volleyball matchup started the day off with a bang going three sets in an evenly matched competition that showcased 17 athletes. Burlingame Head Coach, Chelsi Gardner led the Navy team while Horton Charger Head Coach, Kristin Fassnacht led the Gold team. The matchup proved to be a back and forth affair with the Navy team coming out on top in three sets 27-29, 25-22 and 28-26. In the first set the Gold team established a lead midway through the set, but the Navy team battled back as the set needed extra points to decide the winner. Ultimately the kills from Jefferson County North Charger, Jamie Navinskey and Frankfort Wildcat, Ashley Joseph proved to be too much for the Navy team as the Gold team took set one 29-27. In set two it was again back and forth down to the wire with the Navy team establishing a lead late to secure the set 25-22, with the upfront presence of Centralia’s Kaitlyn Koch, Burlingame’s, Ashton Dorr and Hayley Lewis and Atchison’s, Ashton Ettleman. The electric play continued between the two teams in set three needing extra points again to decide the winner as the Navy team grabbed the win 28-26 to win the match.

Next up the girls basketball matchup kept the day featuring 17 athletes (with two volleyball players playing in the basketball game) and it was all Gold team in the matchup grabbing the win 93-46. The Navy team was led by Horton Charger Head Coach, Ken Shippy while the Gold Team was coached by Atchison Lady Red Head Coach, Roni Ettleman. Both teams traded blows early in a tight contest, until the Gold team took over and never looked back as they rained in nine three-pointers in the competition and used a fast pace style to gain control and lead 53-22 at the half and go on to win. Emporia State commit and JCN Charger, Jacee Kramer paced the Gold team with 22 points, while Highland Scottie commit and Atchison Lady Red, Arika Smith chipped in 17 points. Three others tallied double figures also for the Gold team as Shawnee Mission North product, Darian Dozier scored 20 points, Lexie Villegas of Bishop Miege posted 14 and JCN Charger, Jamie Navinskey posted 10 points. The Navy team in the loss was led by Shawnee Mission East product, Molly Ross who score 13 points, eight of which came in the first two minutes of the game. Frankfort Wildcat, Ashley Joseph and Riverside Cyclone, Erica Halter each added eight points for Navy.

In the boys basketball contest it was a high scoring affair that featured 30 athletes with every competitor notching two points or more in the All-Star matchup that saw the Navy team grab a 131-115 victory. Team Navy was led by Valley Heights Head Coach, Adam Plummer while team Gold was led by B&B Head Coach, Jason Hajek. With 15 players on each team the teams played two 30 minute halves allowing players to each see significant playing time. Both teams went on runs taking leads in the game as the Navy team lead 63-55 at the half, the game was tight down the stretch until the Navy team used a stretch run to grab the win 131-115 win. Six guys in double figures led Navy with Gaven Schumann of Sabetha scoring 14 points, while Axtell Eagle, Payton Heinen and Rock Creek Mustang, Ryan Schneider each posted 12 points. Jackson Heights Cobra, Cameron Thomas, Silver Lake Eagle, Trenton Smith and Frankfort's, Lucas Adams each added double figures with 13, 12 and 10 points, respectively for Navy in the win. In the loss a game-high 20 points was scored by Horton Charger, Dakota Bayles, while two of his teammates on the Gold team in Atchison’s, Tanner Huntington and B&B’s Dustin Rottinghaus scored double figures with 12 and 10 points.
