Hiawatha Boys & Girls Win Holton Track Invite, While Four Other Area Schools Have Top Performers

First track and field meet of the year and five area teams and one other faced off against each other in competition at the Holton Invitational as Holton, Hiawatha, Jackson Heights, Valley Falls, Atchison and Abilene competed against each other.

At the end of the day the Hiawatha Red Hawks started the track season off with a pair for first place team performances behind multiple first place showing and top three performances, too.

In the girls competition leading the charge for Hiawatha was Jordan Puvogel who took both the 800 and 1600 meter competition titles behind times of 1:03.00 and 5:34.62. The first place showing by the Red Hawk girls didn't stop there as Courtney Brockhoff ran her way to first in the 3200 meter run (13:26.76), Brianna Schmitz leapt her way to a win in the high jump (5'00), while adding a pair of second place showing in the 200 and 400 meter dash. Red Hawks relay teams claimed first in both the 4x400 and 4x800 meter relay with times of 4:27.41 and 10:57.12. Two other first place performances were grabbed by Red Hawks as well with Delaney Koerprich winning the triple jump (30'07) and Emily Gartner claiming the discus throw crown with toss of 128'07.50, while finishing second in the shot put.

Molly Kettler added a second place performance for Hiawatha in the 1600 meter run, while Emily Bauer and Kendra Overdick each took third place in the 800 meter run and long jump, respectively.

For the boys the Red Hawks were four first place finishes in the discus, javelin, 3200 meter run and 4x800 meter relay. In the throwing competition it was Quentin Overdick taking home the discus title with a toss of 154'03, while also taking third in the javelin and his teammate Shawn Green won the javelin behind a throw of 152'07. Brandt Houk raced his way to the 3200 meter run title behind a time of 11:19.64 and took second in the 1600 meter run, while boy’s 4x800 meter relay team won that competition (8:57.41).

Conner Bigham notched a pair of second place showings for the Red Hawks in the 800 meter run and the high jump, while Brendan Steele, Bryce Oldridge and Jesse Quinn each placed second in the long jump, shot put and 3200 meter run, respectively. Tyler Boeckman and Chris Monhollon both placed third on the day in the 1600 and 3200 meter runs, respectively.

For the host team of the Invite, Holton multiple performers enjoyed great days in competition. In the boys competition six first place finishes were earned by the Wildcats, while three were earned by the girls.

Holly Karn and Alex Meyers gave the Holton girls a sweep in the hurdles competition as they won the 100 and 300 meter hurdles, respectively with times of 18.47 and 54.00. Meyers also took home second place in the 100 meter hurdles, while Karn took third in the 300. Kyrstie Miller claimed the other first place showing with a toss of 34'11 in the shot put and took home second place in the discus. Girl’s 4x100 meter relay team and Ashley Cook each took home second place showings, for Ashley it was in the competition of long jump.

Holton boys relay teams spear headed their performances on the day with a first place showing in the 4x100 and 4x400 meter relay behind times of 45.62 and 3:44.24. Drake Ewing, Dakota Colhouer, Brenden Hampton and Nathan Haefke all took home first place showings winning the 100 meter dash (11.46), 1600 meter run (5:02.15), 110 meter hurdles (15.99) and triple jump (38’09.25), respectively. Hampton added a third place to his day in the 200 meter dash, while Indee Allen took home a second in the triple jump and both Spencer Baum and Dalton Beightal each took home a third place in the high jump and shot put, respectively.

Atchison, Valley Falls and Jackson Heights all had multiple top flight performances on the day, too.

For the Redmen it was Sierra Smith leading the way in the girl’s competition winning both the 100 and 200 meter dash races behind times of 12.75 and 26.50. The lone other first place finish for the lady Red was by the 4x100 meter relay team as they raced to a time of 54.15. Lyndi Hanson took home second in the 800 meter run, third place showings were earned by Kate McCoole, Lucy Newkirk and Harleigh Boldridge in the 400 meter dash, 3200 meter run and shot put, respectively.

Atchison boys were led by Justin Witmer and Dane Anderson who both took a first place performance. Witmer won the 800 meter run behind a time of 2:08.50, while Anderson won the shot put with a toss of 47’11 and added a second place finish in the discus throw. Jerel Rawls took home a pair of top three finishes grabbing second in the 400 meter dash and third place in the triple jump for Atchison, while the Redmen 4x100 and 4x800 meter relay teams each took home third place. Shane Johnson also notched a pair of top three finishes placing second in the 200 meter dash and third in the 100 meter dash, while his teammate Bennie Smith took second in the 100.

Valley Falls saw their best performances on the day come at the hands of Max Badgett who won multiple competitions, winning both the 200 meter dash (24.31) and the long jump (20’01.75). Dallas Brown added a third place showing in the discus for the Dragon boys, while Dalton Morrow took home third also in the 800 meter run. The Dragon relay teams grabbed a pair of second place showings in the 4x100 and 4x400.

In the girl’s competition, Emily Nottingham led the Dragons with a pair of second place finishes in the 100 and 200 meter dash races, while the lady Dragon 4x100 and 4x400 meter relay teams each notched third place. Tamara Drinkard also registered a third place performance for the Dragons coming in the high jump contest.

Jackson Heights on the day had just three top three finishes with Cole Olberding leading the charge taking first place in the high jump with a leap of 6’02, while Kaitlynn Little had the top girls performance for the Cobras with a second place finish in the 3200 meter run and third place in the 1600 meter run.

With the first track action in the books the teams and competitors have their measure’s set to chase and improve upon through the rest of the season and the quest for making it to State as started with the start of the season.
