Sabetha 2-Man Teams Takes 1st & 4-Man 2nd at Wamego Golf Invite

Sabetha boy's golf came into the season looking to carry momentum from last season's Class 3A State championship into this year and they started off the 2014 season in strong fashion at the Wamego Invitational on Tuesday.

Bluejays flew home with a first place performance in the 2-man competition and claimed second place in the 4-man competition, with five top 20 individual performances, too.

The tandem of Connor Epple and Reese Lierz combined to post a score of 186 claiming the 2-man title over Abilene who registered the same score but the tie-breaker was in the favor of the Bluejays. Lierz posted a 90 tying him for the 13th best individual round on the day, while Epple contributed with a 96 on the day for the 2-man winning score.

Sabetha top individual performances came from guys on the 4-man team that claimed second as a team with a combined score of 359; the host Wamego had a team post a score of 321 to claim first place. The Bluejays 4-man team was led by Derek Halls who posted the best Bluejay round on the day shooting an 87, to not only led the 4-man team but give him a eighth place individual performance. Tyler Ulrich was the only other Bluejay to finish under 90, breaking that mark by one stroke posting an 89 and giving him a 12th place finish on the day. Kevan Herbster and Darrin Wenger added the two other scores for the Bluejays on the 4-man team shooting rounds of 91 and 92, respectively. Herbster finished tied for 16th with his 91 and Wenger finished tied for 18th on the day with his 92.

The Bluejays will look to build upon their first action of the young golf season when they take to the course Friday at the Hiawatha Invitational.
