Kanzaland Area High School Track Athletes Compete at KU Relays

This past Friday and Saturday 46 Kanzaland area high school track athletes competed in the 87th edition of Kansas Relays in Lawrence at the newly opened Rock Chalk Park.

Hiawatha, Atchison, Valley Heights, Frankfort, Jefferson County North, Perry Lecompton, Clifton-Clyde and Washington County were all represented at this year's Kansas Relays.
 
The Hiawatha Red Hawks were led by a seventh place performance at the Relays in the Girls Distance Medley, as the group of Molly Kettler, Brianna Schmitz, Kailey Davis and Jordan Puvogel raced to a time of 13:08.34. The Red Hawk quartet took home seventh place out of 24 teams that raced. Kettler, Davis, and Puvogel were joined by Courtney Brockhoff on the Red Hawks 4x800 meter relay and 4xMile relay teams and the Red Hawks took 16th and 18th place, respectively in those events. In the 4x800 the girls posted a time of 10:16.59, taking 16th out of 35 teams, while in the 4xMile the team took 18th out of 22 teams with a time of 23:13.39. Puvogel also competed in the 1600 meter run for the Red Hawks and tallied a time of 5:27.66 placing 30th out of 36 runners. On the field Emily Gartner competed for the lady Red Hawks and placed 16th in the discus and 26th in the shot put. In the discus on Friday, Emily posted a throw of 113’07 taking 16th of 21 throwers, while in the shot put she registered a mark of 34’6 ¼ placing 26th of 35 throwers.
 
Hiawatha in the boy’s competition was represented both on the field and the track, also. In the field competition on Friday, Quentin Overdick tossed the discus to a mark of 151’11 placing 16th of 24 throwers. While on the track the Red Hawk group of Brandt Houk, Brendan Steele, Conner Bigham and Tyler Boeckman posted a time of 11:35.48 in the boys Distance Medley relay placing 21st of 23 teams. The same Red Hawk quartet raced in the 4x800 meter relay posting a time of 8:49.47 finishing 36th out of 38 teams.
 
Majority of the Atchison Redmen competitors at the Relays competed in relay competitions. For the girls the quartet of Imogene Bratton, Sierra Smith, Mady Shipley and Sarah Jaloma competed in the Sprint Medley and placed 11th out of 15 teams posting a time of 4:42.98. While Shipley, Bratton and Smith all raced on the 4x100 meter relay with Peyton Welch posting a time of 51.97 taking 28th out of 47 teams. Mady Shipley also competed with Jailhyn Bratton, Anna Shipley and Kate McCoole in the 4x400 meter relay posting a time of 4:27.87 taking 43rd out of 47 teams. Smith also competed solo in the 100 meter dash posting a time of 12.54 to take 11th out of 41 competitors, missing out of qualifying for the finals by just two spots.
 
For the Atchison boys the Sprint Medley team of Shane Johnston, Bennie Smith, Jerel Rawls and Justin Whitmer took 10th of 16teams behind a time of 3:51.93. While, Johnston and Smith also ran on the Redmen’s 4x100 meter relay team with Parker Welch and Wade Gassman posting a time of 45.96 for 37th place of 50 teams. Dane Anderson competed in the shot put for Atchison on Saturday as he posted a toss of 45’1 ½ taking 28th place out of 34 throwers.
 
Valley Heights Mustangs were represented by the duo of Elijah Smith and Brandi Jo Roepke who each competed in three events at the Relays. Smith on Friday took home one of the best area performances at the Relays finishing seventh in the triple jump behind a leap of 44’9 ¾. Elijah competed against 31 other jumpers in the triple jump, while he also posted a time of 15.70 in the 110 meter hurdles on Friday finishing with the 26th best time of 39 runners. On Saturday, Smith competed in the long jump placing 14th out of 33 jumpers with a leap of 16’3 ¼. Roepke competed on both days of competition too at the Relays as she finished 29th in the 100 meter dash on Friday with a time of 12.94 and placed 12th in the 400 meter dash with a time of 59.77, missing out on qualifying on the finals by two spots in the 400. Brandi competed against 41 runners in the 100 and 32 in the 400, while on Saturday she placed 15th out of 33 jumpers in the long jump behind a leap of 16’3 ¼.
 
For Jefferson County North, Laramie Leakey and Heather Polson competed at the Relays competing in the pole vault and high jump. Leakey registered a mark of 9’10 in the girl’s pole vault placing 19th out of 27 competitors, while Polson posted a leap of 5’0 ¼ in the high jump placing 11th out of 26 competitors.
Out of the Big Seven League the Perry Lecompton Kaws had the best finish from the area as the boy’s 4x400 meter relay team after qualifying for the finals with the fourth fast time in qualifying (3:24.33), took home second place in the finals posting a time of 3:25.42 in the finals. Colin Coleman, Seth Surface, Cody Williams and Will Hinrichsen posted that performance and competed in the 4x100 meter relay, too. In the 4x100 the Kaws boys finished 22nd out of 50 teams with a time of 44.43 and while not qualifying for the finals they raced on Saturday in the Sunflower Showdown 4x100 and took seventh out of eight teams with a time of 45.32. Coleman also competed solo in the 400 meter dash and qualified for the finals with the eighth fastest time on Friday (50.04) out of 31 competitors and took home fifth place in the finals with a time of 50.22.
 
The Kaws also had some girls competing as teams competed in the 4x400 and 4x200 meter relays. The group of Lexia Jamison, Halsten Coyle, Kaylee Visser and Emma Taylor posted a time of 4:21.94 to finish 37th out of 47 teams. The Kaws 4x200 team posted a time of 1:58.85 finishing 30th of 30 teams. Emma Taylor also competed in the 400 meter dash posting a time of 1:03.47 placing 31st of 32 runners, while Taylor Fuller tossed the javelin at the Relays posting a toss of 117’8 good for 1th4 out of 24 competitors.
 
Frankfort, Clifton-Clyde and Washington County also had one competitor at the Relays this year.
For Frankfort senior, Lucas Adams competed in the pole vault on Saturday and finished without a mark on the day. Clifton-Clyde Eagle, William Ohlde posted a time of 15.56 in the 110 meter hurdles taking 20th place out of 39 runner and Washington County Tiger, Dylan Hodgson won his heat in the 1600 meter run with a time of 4:25.13, but finished 11th overall out of 38 competitors.
