Atchison Wins Own Volleyball Tourney and Hiawatha Takes Second
By Mike Smith

An action packed weekend of high school sports with many volleyball tournaments going on as the volleyball season heads into the final week stretch before league tournaments come in about a week.

The Atchison Redmen played host to an eight team volleyball tournament with all Kanzaland area teams performing, and the Redmen would highlight their home tourney winning while going 5-0 in their matchups. Atchison, in their pool play, went 3-0, beating Oskaloosa, Maur Hill-Mount Academy and Pleasant Ridge. The Rams of Pleasant Ridge finished second in the pool with a pair of wins.

The second pool featured Hiawatha, Perry Lecompton, Horton and KC Christian and wasn't as clear cut.  Hiawatha, Perry Lecompton and Horton all went 2-1 in the action, beating up on each other. With all the tiebreakers hashed out, Hiawatha came out first in the pool and Horton was second.

That set up Horton versus Atchison in one semifinal and Hiawatha versus Pleasant Ridge in the other. Atchison and Hiawatha only need two sets each to notch the wins and advanced to the finals. The Redmen won their semifinal 25-19, 25-12, while the Hiawatha Redhawks won 25-23, 25-10.

Atchison had cruised past all their competition all day, winning every matchup in straight sets and the finals against Hiawatha was the same with Atchison winning 25-16, 25-16.

In the third place match, it was maybe one of the more highly contested matchups as Horton came away with a three set win over Pleasant Ridge (27-25, 22-25, 25-16) . The third and fourth place teams of each pool matched up against each other, with Perry Lecompton winning in straight sets over Oskaloosa (25-19, 26-24) and Maur Hill-Mount Academy claiming victory in straight sets over KC Christian (25-15, 15-15) in the matchup of fourth place teams from pool play.

Atchison highlighted the tournament at home and placed four girls on the all tournament team. Abby and Avery Enzbrenner, Ashton Ettleman and Laurene Cushinberry all made the all-tourney team with their performances on the court. Hiawatha placed the second most on the all-tourney team with a pair of players; Elizabeth Chilcoat and Brianna Schmitz. Rounding out the rest of the all-tourney team was: Megan Voyles (Horton), Catherine Campbell (Maur Hill-Mount Academy), Taylor Willets (Oskaloosa), Ashton Langley (Pleasant Ridge) and Kesley Kasson (Perry-Lecompton).
