Coffeyville Holds On For Tight Win Over Highland
By Mike Smith

Many things went in favor of the Highland Community College Scotties on Saturday, but ultimately the main category you want in your favor at the end of the game was in favor of Coffeyville Community College. The Ravens notched their fourth win of the season and third conference win, holding onto a 7-3 victory.

The Scotties out gained the Ravens on the day 260 to 188 in total yards, and had two more first downs than the Ravens, as the Scotties moved the ball but the Ravens did the ole bend but don't break performance allowing yards but not the most important part, points.

Coffeyville struck first in the ballgame as the scored early in the ball game going seven plays and 52 yards for a two-yard touchdown run by Rashon Thames with 11:23 to go in the first quarter. The touchdown was the only carry for Thames on the day.

Highland cut into the Coffeyville lead in the second quarter registering a 10 play 67 yard scoring drive that resulted in 30-yard Gary Flack field goal. The scoring stopped after that as both defenses stepped up and forced turnovers in the ball game.

For the Scotties, they got to the quarterback for four sacks and forced two Coffeyville turnovers but Coffeyville forced three Scotties turnovers. With a battle back and forth Coffeyville did enough to hold on to the 7-3 win. But Highland found some offense they had been lacking the past couple of weeks as quarterback, Desmond McGee had a solid game, 8-28 109 yards and an interception, but also rushed for 124 yards on 19 carries, accounting for a majority of the Scotties 260 yards of offense on the day.

The  Scotties have now lost three straight games falling to 1-5 on the season and 1-4 in conference play, and they now turn their attention to a 4-2 Garden City team who the Scotties will host this Saturday. For Coffeyville they are now 4-2 on the season.
