On Wednesday night a pair of NEKL legion squads squared off in a League doubleheader, while another had a non-league doubleheader on the road. Atchison played host to Hiawatha and the teams split the doubleheader on the night with Atchison claiming game one 7-0 and Hiawatha winning game two 7-6 in six innings. Frankfort was the other NEKL team in action last night and they travelled to Marysville for a doubleheader and came away with the split, falling 14-1 in four innings in game one and winning game two 7-3.

Atchison and Hiawatha Split League DoubleHeader

Atchison played host to Hiawatha on Wednesday night for a League doubleheader and both teams went home with a win and for Hiawatha it was their first League win of the season. Atchison controlled game one and earned the 7-0, while Hiawatha gave up the early lead in game two but fought back to win 7-6 in six innings for the doubleheader split.

It was the pitching of Mark McDermed and Atchison taking advantage of their opportunities on the base pads in game one that led the A's to the 7-0 win in game one. McDermed was dialed in on the mound as he pitched the complete game shutout, allowing on three base runners, giving up two hits and a walk, while striking out eight, earning him McDonald's "Player of the Game" honors on KNZA.

Offensively, Atchison got runs on the board early scoring two in the bottom of the first to take the early 2-0 lead, as Brian Scott produced an RBI triple to highlight the inning. The A's added two more in the third on a two RBI double by Lane Fry and tallied a run in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, also. Tyler Harris paced the Atchison offense going 2-3 with a run scored, while Fry was 1-3 with a double and two RBI and Scott finished 1-2 with a RBI, two runs scored and walk.

Hiawatha only managed two hits in the game one loss those coming from Taylor Jacobsen and Ryker Smith.

Game two proved to be a drastically different game than game one with multiple plays throughout the competition going in the favor of both teams, with Hiawatha ultimately grabbing the 7-6 win in six innings after giving up the early lead.

Hiawatha struck first in the contest with a three-run first innings highlighted by a Parker Hasenkamp, two RBI single and lead 3-1 after the first inning, but Atchison took the lead in the bottom of the second. The A's tallied four-runs in the second, including a two-run homer by Quentan Riechart to gain the lead and made it a 6-3 advantage after the third. Hiawatha didn't go away quietly battling back in the top of the fourth inning to draw within in one-run after scoring a pair, including Brendan Steele sliding in under a tag at home plate. Leading 6-5 going into the top of the seventh, Atchison was three outs away from the win but Hiawatha battled again and Baxter DeFore came around to score on a fielder's choice after leading the inning off with a single, the play was a controversial play as DeFore appeared to be tagged on his way to home but the fielder dropped the ball while applying the tag and DeFore scored to tie the game. Atchison had their opportunity in the bottom of the fifth, but a throw from center fielder, Brendan Steele to Dakota Bayles and then to the catcher, DeFore got the A's runner at home and push the game to extras.

In the top of the sixth Hiawatha put together a pair of singles to lead the inning off and a RBI sacrifice fly by Jacobsen plated the go ahead run to give Hiawatha the lead 7-6. Atchison worked a pair of one-out walks against Hiawatha pitcher, Shawn Green but a great thrown by DeFore to catch a run stealing and a fly ball out gave Hiawatha the win.

Steele, Hasenkamp and Marshall Swearingen all had two hit games, as Steele finished 2-2 with two runs scored and a walk, Hasenkamp was 2-3 with two RBI, a run scored and walk and Swearingen finished 2-2 with two walks. While, Green earned the win on the mound pitching the final three innings giving up just one-hit and four walks.

Atchison in the loss was led by Riechart who finished the game 2-2 with two RBI, a run scored, double and two-run homer.

With the split on the night Atchison moved to 8-10 on the season and 3-8 in the League, while Hiawatha moved to 4-18 on the year and 1-11 in League play.

Frankfort Splits Road Non-League Doubleheader Versus Marysville

Frankfort travelled to Marysville for a non-league showdown in legion baseball on Wednesday and finished the night with the doubleheader split, falling in game 14-1 in four innings but bouncing back in game two to win 7-3.

It was all Marysville in game one as they Marysville out-hit Frankfort 11-2 and pounced early with the runs to control the game after scoring eight in the first inning and adding six more in the third to gain the 14-1 win. Frankfort was also hurt by four errors in the competition adding to the hot bats of Marysville, as Brock Watts earned the win on the mound for Marysville in just three innings pitched as the game ended in the fourth via run-rule.

Game two proved to be a different game for Frankfort as they bounced back and earned the doubleheader split winning 7-3. Frankfort got the offense going early for themselves in game two plating four-runs in the first inning and adding two more in the second to lead 6-0, before Marysville got on the board. Marysville managed three runs scoring in the second, fourth and sixth but it wasn't enough to make a comeback as Frankfort added another run to the six in the first two innings for the 7-3 win.

Sam Steinlage and Lucas Adams paced the Frankfort offense each tallying three hits, as Frankfort out-hit Marysville 12-6 in the contest. Derek Trimble added three RBI's on the night for Frankfort's offense, while Derek Porting picked up the complete game pitching win going seven innings giving three runs on six hits and striking out nine.

With the split against Marysville, Frankfort moves to 7-9 on the season.
