It was night packed full of Legion baseball action on Wednesday evening as all six Northeast Kansas League teams squared off in League doubleheaders. Doniphan County went on the road and picked up a pair of wins sweeping Atchison 4-1 and 10-3 behind two complete game pitching performances. Sabetha took down Seneca 7-2 at home for a win, but game two of the doubleheader was called in the third inning due to rain. While, Hiawatha hosted Frankfort and both teams finished the night with a win as the teams split the doubleheader with Frankfort claiming game one 7-3 in nine innings and Hiawatha won game two in seven innings.

Doniphan County Sweeps Atchison on the Road

With a pair of League wins on the road against Atchison Doniphan County took over the lead in the NEKL standings topping Atchison 4-1 and 10-3, behind a pair of complete game pitching performances.

In game one, Jeffery Watts continued in strong season on the mound going the distance giving up just one-run on four hits, while striking out seven to earn the win, while Atchison's, Tanner Huntington did his best to match Watts but gave up four-runs, despite striking out 12. Offensively, Phoenix Keller paced Doniphan County with a 3-4 showing with an RBI and two runs scored, while Cody Israel had two hits. Brian Scott lead Atchison in the loss with a pair of hits, as Doniphan County won 4-1.

Caleb Winkel kept the strong pitching performances going in game number two as he went all five innings to earn the complete game win giving up three runs. The offense broke through more for Doniphan County in game two with the 10 runs scored in the 10-3 win, as Nathan Gaarder blasted a homerun as one of his two hits in the contest with two runs scored and three RBI's. Israel had another multi-hit game finishing with two hits and Tucker Morris added a two RBI double. Chase Behler took the loss for Atchison on the mound, while Brian Scott added another hit to his strong offensive season.

With the win Doniphan County moved to 15-7 overall and 10-2 in League action, while Atchison fell to 9-13 on the year and 4-11 in League play.

Hiawatha and Frankfort Split a Pair of Extra-Inning Games

Extra baseball was needed in both games at Noble Park on Wednesday between Hiawatha and Frankfort as each team picked up a win on the night, but needed extra innings to do so. Frankfort claimed game one over Hiawatha using a four-run ninth inning to win 7-3, while Hiawatha responded in game two to win 8-7 scoring two-runs in the bottom of the seventh in win in walk-off fashion.

Hiawatha struck first in game one scoring in the bottom of the first inning, but Frankfort tied things up with a run in the second and took the lead with a two-run third. The game remained 3-1 until Hiawatha broke through again in the sixth scoring a pair to tie the game at 3-3, ultimately forcing extra innings. In the top of the ninth Frankfort used five hits, a walk and Hiawatha error to score four and ultimately grab the win.

Frankfort's offense was balanced in the contest as all 10 batters notched hits and every player also had an RBI or run scored in the win. Devin Rempe provided the RBI double that gave Frankfort the lead in the top of the ninth, while JT Rosine had a triple in the contest. For Hiawatha, Parker Hasenkamp was 2-3 with an RBI, run scored and walk, while Taylor Jacobsen was 2-4.

Game two started similar to game one as Hiawatha scored first, notching a run in the bottom of the first, but Frankfort answered with two-runs in the second and third innings leading 4-1 until Hiawatha came back with two-runs in the bottom of the third and three in the fourth making a 6-5 after four innings as Frankfort scored a run in the top of the fourth. Frankfort tied the game in the fifth, forcing extra innings and in the seventh Frankfort scored another to take the 7-6 leading going into the bottom of the inning. In the bottom of the seventh Hiawatha used an RBI double by Hasenkamp to tie the game and a bases loaded walk drawn by Shawn Green gave Hiawatha the 8-7 win.

Hasenkamp and Dakota Bayles paced the Hiawatha offense which only had six hits, five coming from Hasenkamp and Bayles, as Parker finished the game 3-4 with a run scored and three RBI's, while Bayles was 2-4 with two runs scored and two RBI. Dalton Lehmkuhl picked up the pitching win pitching all seven innings giving up seven runs, but only two were earned.

Frankfort in the loss was led by Lucas Adams who finished the game 3-4 with two runs scored and Rosine added a 2-3 game with a run scored and walk.

With the split on the night Frankfort moved to 8-12 on the season and 5-8 in the League, while Hiawatha moved to 5-21 overall and 2-14 in League play.

Sabetha Tops Seneca at Somerset Park, While Game Two Called Due to Weather

It was a scheduled doubleheader at Somerset Park on Wednesday night between Sabetha and Seneca but only one game was able to be finished between the two teams as Sabetha claimed the 7-2 win in game one, while game two was called in the top of the third with two-outs and scoreless.

Behind a four-run second inning and the pitching of Jake Meyer, Sabetha was able to pick up their 20th win of the season. Meyer pitched a complete game giving up two-runs on two walks and six hits, all singles, while striking out two, earning him McDonald's "Player of the Game" honors. Gaven Schumann, Tyler Ulrich and Brandon Poe each had a hit in the contest for Sabetha, while Schumann and Ulrich both scored two runs and Poe had a run scored and an RBI.

For Seneca their lone runs came in the first and fifth innings, as Justice McKernan paced the offense coming up with half of the team’s hits on the night, with a three-hit evening and two runs scored. Cody Rottinghaus took the loss on the mound for Seneca giving up seven-runs on five hits, while striking out seven in four and one-third innings. Andrew Oller finished the game on the mound for Seneca.

With the win for Sabetha they improved to 20-12 on the season and 10-3 in League action, while Seneca fell to 12-6 overall and 12-5 in League play.
