Atchison opens the AAA State Legion tournament in Pittsburg by wrapping up action early Thursday morning with a tough 7-6 loss to Pittsburg, as the game started late after day one of action was affected by rain. While earlier in the day Hays topped Salina 6-4, Newton cruised past Dodge City 15-5 and Emporia beat Arkansas City 13-9. All four teams that suffered losses on the day actually all scored first in their respective games.

Things got going early for the Atchison A's as they took the early lead and led 3-1 over Pittsburg going into the bottom of the third. An RBI single by Pittsburg drew Pittsburg with in a run but Pittsburg left the bases loaded in the inning and Atchison clung to the lead, 3-2. Atchison responded in the top of the fourth as Brian Scott had an RBI triple and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Cody Calhoon making it 5-2 for Atchison and then added another on a Pittsburg error in the top of the fifth to make it 6-2. Pittsburg after leaving the bases loaded in the third stranded two in the fourth and left the bases loaded in the fifth, too.

Pittsburg wouldn't go away as they chipped away at the A's lead plating a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh to make it 6-4 and then took the lead in the bottom of the eighth by scoring three runs, to lead 7-6. An error by Atchison and an RBI single tied the game for Pittsburg and then a passed ball brought in the run for Pittsburg to take the lead. Down to their final three outs of the game Atchison got a lead-off single by Lane Fry and got another guy on the base but stranded a pair falling 7-6.

Atchison in the loss was led on the mound by Tanner Huntington who pitched seven strong innings giving up six runs on seven hits, nine walks and struck out seven. While offensively, Scott was 2-4 with two RBI's, a run scored and walk and Cole Siebenmorgan was 2-2 with two runs scored and three walks.

Day two of action will start in the morning with the elimination bracket opening at 10:00am with Salina facing off against Dodge City and then Arkansas City will take Atchison on following the first game. In the nightcap in the winner's bracket Hays will face off against Newton at 5:00pm and then Emporia versus Pittsburg will follow to wrap up day two of the AAA State Legion tournament.
