Hiawatha Leads Area Performances at Holton Cross Country Invite

Several area teams converged on Holton in Thursday for cross country as the Wildcats hosted an area meet with multiple area teams and a few others.

It was the Big Seven with the top notch performances on the day as the Hiawatha Red Hawks paced the way for the area performances with first place girls team performance and second place boys team performance, while claiming the top spot in both competitions individually.

The Hiawatha girls posted 34 points, to just beat out Tonganoxie by five points for first place, giving the Chieftains second and ACCHS Tigers finished in third as a team. Royal Valley, Holton and McLouth/Oskaloosa finished fourth, fifth and sixth in the girls’ team standings.

On the boys side it was Tonganoxie claiming first place, as Hiawatha notched second place and Royal Valley boys took home third place as a team. McLouth/Oskaloosa and Jefferson County North rounded out the Top five placing fourth and fifth, respectively as teams, while Holton, Jackson Heights and Valley Falls finished out the team performances placing sixth, seventh and eighth.

The top two individual showings came by Hiawatha Red Hawks as Jordan Puvogel won her second competition of the year posting a time of 16:47.47, winning by nearly 26 seconds, while Brandt Houk took first in the boys race with a time of 18:26.41, winning by nearly eight seconds. Puvogel was joined by four of her teammates in the Top 20 as Molly Kettler, Aly Shamburg and Courtney Brockhoff all finished in the Top 10 at fifth (17:47.97), eighth (18:00.94) and 10th (18:20.78), respectively and Emma Williams finished 19th (19:00.15). Two more Red Hawks earned Top 20 performances as Jesse Quinn and Gavin Lierz placed sixth and 11th in the boys competition with times of 19:01.69 and 19:18.34.

ACCHS Tigers had a pair of Top five finishers on the day as Jack Siebert placed fifth in the boys competition after posting a time of 18:38.68 and Madison Bissell continued to perform strong placing third in the girl's race behind a time of 17:30.31. Beba Scholz and Maddison Forbes also posted Top 20 finishes for the lady Tigers finishing 14th (18:46.87) and 17th (18:52.40), respectively.

The Royal Valley boys took third place as a team and were led by Kwaki Spoonhunter who finished 12th with a time of 19:19.81, while Kaytlyn Goodrel and Katie Hanshaw finished in the Top 20 for the girls competition. Goodrel placed 11th with a time of 18:20.80 and Hanshaw finished 18th (18:52.87).

Riverside, Jackson Heights, Perry Lecompton, Jefferson County North, Holton and McLouth/Oskaloosa all had at least one Top 20 finisher at the Holton Invite.

The Cyclones were led by an eighth and ninth place finish by Cole Hinton and Tristan Hinton in the boy’s competition as they posted times of 19:16.94 and 19:17.43. For Jackson Heights Kaitlynn Little posted the best showing finishing seventh in the girls race behind a time of 17:53.59, while Seth Holliday on the boys side finished 14th (19:26.12). Perry Lecompton Kaws, Lexia Jamison brought home a silver medal finishing second in the girls competition with a time of 17:13.97, while Bjorn Funk on the boys side finished 10th (19:17.43).

The Chargers of JCN had three Top 20 finishers on the day with two coming in the boys competition as Brysen Weishaar placed 15th (19:29.30) and Ted Sharp finished 17th (19:31.84). In the girl’s competition JCN Charger, Carissa McAfee brought home a ninth place finishing after posting time of 18:07.38. For the host Holton Wildcats, Tristan Parks finished 13th (19:20.31) in the boys competition. McLouth/Oskaloosa was led by Ryan Bristol who raced to a seventh place finish (19:09.56) and Tristan Funk placed 16th (19:30.65).

Every area team finished with a Top 20 performer on the day at the Holton cross country invitational with the area talent showcased overall.
