On a weekend packed full of volleyball action for area team’s three area squads in Valley Heights, Clifton-Clyde and Jefferson County North took to the court in the Riley County Invitational on Saturday.

The sixth ranked 1A-DI team in Valley Heights suffered their first losses of the season but put together the best area team performance on the day by taking home second place after finishing the day 3-2. The Mustangs finished 2-1 in pool play to finish second in their pool and advance to the Semifinals. In pool Valley Heights picked up the straight set win over St. Mary's (25-20, 25-17) and straight set win over Jefferson County North (25-22, 25-10), while falling to Clay Center in straight sets (18-25, 19-25). In the Semifinals the Mustangs took on the host school in Riley County and picked up the straight set win 25-12, 25-18 to move on to the Championship and get another shot at Clay Center who beat Chapman in their Semifinal match. In the Championship the Mustangs made it interesting but ultimately fell in three sets to Clay Center; winning set one  25-23 but losing sets two and three, 20-25, 14-25.

It was different days for Clifton-Clyde and Jefferson County North then Valley Heights as they struggled in pool play. The Eagles finished the day 1-2 in action with a three set win over Mission Valley (20-25, 25-11, 27-25) and straight set losses to Riley County (22-25, 12-25) and Chapman (17-25, 17-25). While Jefferson County North went 0-3 on the day falling in straight sets to Valley Heights and Clay Center (20-25, 24-26) and three sets against St. Mary's (25-12, 22-25, 22-25).

Both Valley Heights and Clifton-Clyde now turn their attention back to Twin Valley League play next week and for Jefferson County North they get back to Northeast Kansas League play.
