Pleasant Ridge Uses a Strong Second Half, Gains First Win of 2014
By Jonny Kane

It was a back and forth ballgame throughout, but when things came down to crunch time it was the Pleasant Ridge Rams making all the big plays coming away with their first win of the 2014 season over JCN 50-30.

The Jefferson County North Chargers got off to a great start in the first quarter of the ballgame recovering a Pleasant Ridge muffed punt getting the ball first and goal from the one-yard line. Charger quarterback Bryce Noll would punch it in and complete the two-point conversion try to Joel Abel to give them the early 8-0 lead.

Coming off the Charger touchdown, the Rams would score two consecutive touchdowns on runs by quarterback Nick Holmes with first coming from 19 yards out and the second from 14. Neither two-point conversion try was converted giving Pleasant Ridge the 12-8 lead after one quarter of play.

The Chargers would then have their chance to respond and put together another great drive capped off on a 7 yard touchdown pass from Bryce Noll to Cole Bryant but couldn't get the two point try to go giving them just the two point lead.

P Ridge would then put together a great drive of their own ending with once again Nick Holmes punching it in from four yards out with the two point conversion coming from Jagar Haack to give the Rams the 20-14 lead, but that wouldn't last long as the Chargers were able to move it right down the field once again and Bryce took it in from 5 yards out and also scored the two point conversion giving JCN a 22-20 lead heading into halftime.

The second half started off great for the Chargers once again as they took the opening kickoff of the third quarter and drove the ball right down the field into the endzone with another 3 yard run by Bryce Noll, the Juniors third of the evening and a two point conversion pass to Ethan Hubbard gave JCN a 30-20 lead.

This is when things really changed in the ballgame as P Ridge came right back and scored again on a four yard run by Jared Schmalstieg with the two-point conversion coming on a pass from Holmes to Haack to pull the Rams within two. Then, after a crazy  sequence of plays in which P Ridge stopped JCN on a fourth down play; Nick Holmes completely shifted the momentum of the game on a 91 yard touchdown run to put the Rams back on top and give them a  lead that they wouldn't give up as they scored two more times on runs by Schmalstieg and Holmes to result in the 50-30 victory for the Rams.

In the win for the Rams, Junior Nick Holmes had perhaps his best game of his high school career rushing the ball 25 times for 300 yards and 5 touchdowns. To go along with Holmes great game, Jared Schmalstieg had 137 yards himself with 2 scores on the ground. Pleasant Ridge will now shift their attention to Immaculata next week for another Northeast Kansas League match-up with the Raiders.

There were still many bright spots for the Chargers as they moved to 0-3 on the season with Bryce Noll finishing 14-32 passing for 135 yards and a touchdown but also two crucial interceptions in the second half. Noll also had 77 yards rushing and 4 scores but just couldn't get things rolling in the second half resulting in the loss. JCN will now begin to look ahead to next week for a home game with Horton.
