Pleasant Ridge Races Way to NEKL Cross Country Boy's & Girl's League Crowns

It was a beautiful Thursday afternoon and seven Northeast Kansas League schools took to the course to vie for the League cross country title in Horton and it was the Pleasant Ridge Rams girls and boys claiming NEKL team titles.

The Lady Rams posted a 19 point performance to win the League title beating out Jefferson County North and McLouth who finished second and third, respectively. While in the boy's competition, Pleasant Ridge put together 23 points to win the NEKL title, winning by 46 points over the second place team Jefferson County North. Oskaloosa, Jackson Heights, Valley Falls and McLouth finished out the team performances placing third, fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively.

Pleasant Ridge on their way to team League titles saw Kristina Silvers and Luke Oatney claim individual League titles as Silvers posted a time of 17:20.26 to win the girl's race and Oatney raced to a time of 19:08.50 to win the boy's race. On the girls side the Rams took home five more Top 10 finishes as Bridget Howard placed fourth (18:58.27), Grace Wagner ran to a fifth place finish (19:22.75), Grace Dedeke placed sixth (19:33.18), Carly Simonis finished seventh (19:38.65) and Taylor Satre grabbed 10th place (20:25.27). Kaylie Warden also finished in the Top 20 for the lady Rams placing 16th (21:11.28). In the boys competition after Oatney, Tyler Darrow and Gabe Younger placed third (19:45.78) and fourth (19:48.78), respectively, while Dayton Flack and Noah Tattershall also finished in the Top 10. Flack raced to a sixth place finish (19:55.38) and Tattershall placed ninth (20:00.47). Two more Rams finished in the Top 20 helping the boys to the League title, as Clayton Price and Ronny Jared finished 16th (20:09.84) and 17th (20:20.14).

The JCN Chargers took home second place as a boys and girls team at the NEKL meet and had eight Top 20 finishers between both races. Leading the charge for the Chargers was Brysen Weishaar who raced his way to second in the boy’s competition with a time of 19:35.75. Evan Weishaar and Ted Sharp tallied 10th and 11th place finishes for the Chargers with times of 20:00.87 and 20:01.31, respectively, while Thomas Steichen rounded out the Top 20 boys competitors with a 20th place finish (20:51.22). In the girl's race, Carissa McAfee paced the Chargers with a third place finish with a time of 17:58.02. Rebecaa Malin grabbed a ninth place showing in the girls race posting a time of 20:15.75, while Jancita Priest placed 13th (21:02.28) for the Chargers and Kayla Hutzell placed 15th (21:06.53).

Jackson Heights Cobra, Kaitlynn Little struck with a second place performance in the girls race posting a time of 17:27.78 to lead the Cobras on the day. While, Alexis Reischick and Brianna Cattrell placed 11th and 12th, respectively with times of 20:39.56 and 20:50.72. Danyel Duryea also finished in the Top 20 in the girls race finishing 14th with a time of 21:04.31. On the boy’s side, Seth Holliday had the best Cobra performance, placing fifth with a time of 19:49.08.

The McLouth Bulldogs wrapped up the NEKL action with two Top 10 finishers one in each race as Ryan Bristol placed seventh in the boys race with a time of 19:56.34 and Ceara Funk placed eighth in the girls race with a time of 20:01.18. Tristan Funk joined Bristol in the Top 20 in the boys competition placing 18th (20:25.26), while Mable Mestagh and Meghan Jackson placed 18th (21:54.43) and 20th (22:37.65) in the girls race for the Bulldogs.

For the Oskaloosa Bears, Braeden Pfau posted the best performance placing eighth in the boys race behind a time of 19:59.88, while his teammates, Jordan Butler and Nick Courtney raced to 14th (20:04.62) and 15th (20:05.02) place finishes and Shane Adams placed 19th (20:42.46). In the girls competition it was Savannah Noble highlighting the day for the Bears placing 17th with a time of 20:38.00.

Valley Falls Dragons notched a pair of Top 20 finishes in the boys competition as Jason Myers placed 12th (20:03.25) and Justin Myers placed 13th (20:03.79). The host school in the Horton Chargers had their lone Top 20 finish of the day come in the girl's race with Erin Cairo finishing 19th with a time of 22:21.05.

Next up is Regionals for many of the Northeast League teams, while a few will compete one final time in regular season action on Tuesday, October 21st before Regionals.
