Royal Valley Girl's & JCN Boy's Win Jackson Heights Cross Country Invite

One final cross country meet of the regular season took place on Tuesday as Jackson Heights hosted a race involving multiple area teams and it gave way to several solid performances.

Six schools field enough runners in the boys race for teams, while only three did in the girl's competition. The Jefferson County North Chargers charged to first place as a team in the boy’s competition behind five Top 20 finishes on the day, while Nemaha Central and Jackson Heights took home second and third as teams. Royal Valley, Valley Falls and Onaga finished out the boys’ team finishes placing fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively. In the girls race it was the Royal Valley Panthers beating out Nemaha Central and Jefferson County North for first place, giving the Thunder and Chargers second and third, respectively.

Individually it was Jackson Heights and Nemaha Central runners claiming the top spot overall on the day. The host Jackson Heights Cobras saw, Kaitlynn Little race her way to first place posting a time of 16:44 to win by 1:01 on the day. While her teammates, Danyel Duryea, Alexis Rieschick and Brianna Cattrell registered Top 20 finishes placing ninth (19:16), 12th (19:36) and 16th (20:12), respectively. In the boys competition, Seth Holliday posted the best Cobra showing placing eighth behind a time of 18:55, while Dalton Chartier placed 20th (20:04) for the Cobras.

For the Nemaha Central Thunder it was a one-two finish in the boy’s race as Colin Lierz and Mikeal Sperfslage posted times of 17:45 and 18:02 to claiming first and second place. Their teammates, DJ Wykert and Preston Sparling also finished in the Top 20, racing to 16th (19:33) and 17th (19:53) place finishes. In the girls race the Thunder earned a pair of Top 10 finishes as Aidan Schmelzle and Annie Davis posted times of 19:08 and 19:14 to place sixth and seventh, while Abbey Buessing placed 20th (21:01).

Royal Valley girls had six finish in the Top 20 on their way to the top girls team finish as Katie Hanshaw paced the lady Panthers with a time of 17:45 to place second overall. Kaytlyn Gooderl and Tamo Thomas both raced to Top 10 finishes placing fifth (18:37) and 10th (19:32), while Brennah Wahweotten, Meaghan Koon and Lydia Johnson placed 17th (20:20), 18th (20:47) and 19th (20:50). On the boys side of competition Eugene Masquat and Patrick Broxterman paced the Panthers with an 11th (19:16) and 12th (19:16).

The Jefferson County North Chargers ran their way to the boys team crown with five Top 20 finishes, including Brysen Weishaar and Ted Sharp finishing fourth and fifth after posting times of 18:26 and 18:42. Evan Weishaar grabbed a seventh place finish with a time of 18:54, while Thomas Steichen finished 13th (19:25) and Lane Fowler finished 18th (19:57). Carissa McAfee led the lady Chargers, placing third on the day after posting a time of 18:29, while Jacint Priest raced to 13th place (19:50).

Four Onaga Buffaloes notched Top 20 finishes at the Jackson Heights cross country Invitational, as Maggie Revell and Alexis VanDonge raced to fourth and eighth place finishes in the girls race with times of 18:29 and 19:14, respectively. In the boy’s competition, Michael Eisenbarth paced the Buffaloes placing third behind a time of 18:22, while Luke Marten raced to a 14th place finish (19:26).

Riverside, Valley Falls and Doniphan West all each had Top 20 finishers on the day, also. For the Cyclones, Tristan Hinton raced to a sixth place finish, posting a time of 18:49, while Cole Hinton finished 15th (19:28) in the boys competition. Valley Falls had Matthew Branam and Justin Myers finish in the Top 10 in the boys race placing ninth and 10th with times of 19:13 and 19:15, while Jason Myers placed 19th (20:03). While Doniphan West was led by Mackenzie Boos who placed 11th in the girls race with a time of 19:35 and Kassydi Miller who finished 15th (20:02).

The regular season of cross country is in the books and now runners and their schools turn their attention to Regionals this coming weekend. (Full list of Regionals involving area teams -- click here)
