Hiawatha, Pleasant Ridge, Sabetha & ACCHS Notch Top Team Showings at 3A Regional Cross Country Action

After competition on Saturday at Leonardville golf course, six area schools in Class 3A had at least one runner headed to the State competition, next Friday.

The Pleasant Ridge Ram boys posted the best team performance finishing with 50 points to claim the Regional title, while Sabetha followed in second place and Riley County rounded out the Top three boys’ team performances. On the girl's side it was Southeast of Saline claiming the Regional title over Hiawatha by six points, giving the Red Hawks second and ACCHS rounded out the Top three girls’ team finishes to qualify for State.

Pleasant Ridge on their way to first place as a boys team were led by Luke Oatney who finished second with a time 18:18.09, while Ronny Jarred raced to 10th with a time of 19:01.71. Tyler Darrow, Dayton Flack and Gabe Younger finished out the Rams team showing finishing 14th (19:14.73), 17th (19:31.21) and 18th (19:32.08). In the girl's competition, Kristina Silvers qualified for State as an individual after racing her way to eighth place with a time of 17:13.38.

Sabetha boys took home second as a team to earn a spot at State as a team and were led by Keegan Cox who raced his way to fifth place with a time of 18:37.70, while Corbin Cox finished 13th (19:09.11) and Kellen Russell raced to 19th place (19:24.89). Mitchell Lierz and Tyler Huber finished out the Bluejays team score finishing 22nd and 34th, respectively. In the girl's competition, Tayrn Schuette qualified for State individually by placing ninth on the day with a time of 17:15.37.

The Hiawatha Red Hawks behind five Top 20 finishers claimed second as a team and finished only six points off of the Regional title. Jordan Puvogel paced the Red Hawks taking second place with a time of 16:10.71, while Molly Kettler also finished in the Top 10 placing 10th with a time of 17:19.42. Aly Shamburg, Courtney Brockhoff and Kailey Davis rounded out the team scoring for the Red Hawks placing 13th (17:35.21), 17th (17:53.29) and 19th (18:03.95), respectively. On the boy’s side of competition, Brandt Houk raced his way to State, qualifying individually by finishing sixth on the day with a time of 18:45.02.

For ACCHS the girls claimed third place as a team to earn a spot at State and were led by Madison Bissell who placed fifth with a time of 17:06.25. Rebekah Scholz and Maddison Forbes joined Bissell in the Top 20 placing 15th (17:42.63) and 20th (18:09.23). While, Mackenzie Forbes and Erin Hamilton rounded out the lady Tigers team score with 21st and 44th place finishes.

Nemaha Central, Maur Hill-Mount Academy and Marysville each had individuals qualify for the Class 3A State cross country competition. For the Thunder, Colin Lierz and Mikeal Sperfslage both finished in the Top 10 placing fourth (18:29.10) and eighth (18:50.54), respectively. While, Maur Hill Raven, Jack Siebert finsihed seventh with a time of 18:50.21, to qualify for State. Marysville Bulldog, Josef Smith put forth the best boy's showing of the day winning the Regional title with a time of 17:44.35 to move on to State.

Horton, Oskaloosa and Riverside also had performers at the Regional action at Leonardville golf course.

All the area runners that qualified for State in Class 1A now turn their attention to the State competition on October 31st at Rim Rock in Lawrence.
