Sacred Heart Loses in D2 Semi Finals

(KLZA)-- The Exeter-Milligan Timberwolves fought back from a 16 point deficit midway through the second quarter of the D2 East Division Finals Monday to beat Falls City Sacred Heart 28-22.

The top ranked Timberwolves fell behind on the first play of the second quarter when Irish Senior Sawyer Kean scored on a 15-yard run to put the 6th ranked Irish up 6-0. A long return of the kickoff by Kyle Jensen set up the Timberwolves first touchdown.  Jenson scored on a 5-yard run just 56 seconds after the Irish score to knot the score at 6.

The ensuing kickoff was grabbed by Kean at his own one yard line and for the fourth time this seson he took a kick the distance to put the Irish back on top 14-6. Kean also ran for the two-point conversion. Following an Exeter-Milligan fumble recovered by Bryan Jorn the Irish needed just one play for quarterback Austin Malone to scamper in from the five. Malone also scored the two-point conversion and the Irish had a 22-6 lead with 5:58 to play in the half. 

Jensen scored his second TD on a 14 yard run with 4:05 lef t in the half to cap an 8-play, 53 yard drive.  The Irish were forced to punt and Timberwolf Quarterback Sam Zeleny threw the first of his two scoring passes  with :40 seconds left to make it a 22-20 game at halftime.  Derek Luzum caught the first scoring pass.

After intermission the TImberwolves took the opening kickoff of the second half and marched 62 yards in 8-plays for the go ahead and final touchdow of the day. Zeleny hit Dusin Axline out of the backfield for a 12 yards score and Jensen ran for the conversion. Neitehr team was able to put another score on the board.

The Irish felt they had tied the score on a 20 yard pass into the end zone to Bailey Witt late in teh fourth quarter that an official said he did not have control of. Irish faithful did not see it that way.

Exeter-Milligan got nearly 200 yards rushing from Jensen.  The Irish had five turnovers in the game played in raw conditions.  The wind-chill at kickof was -2 degrees.  By the time the game ended the wind-chill was -5.

Exeter-Milligan who won the D1 State Title in 2013 will play for the D2 title Monday in Lincoln against Anselmo-Merna.  Both teams are undefeated.
