Doniphan West Wrestlers Take Second at Onaga Invite, While Several Areas Have Top Performers

Several Northeast Kansas area teams hit the mats to keep the wrestling season rolling on Saturday at Onaga as the Buffaloes hosted a tournament.

It would be the Doniphan West Mustangs claiming the top area performances finishing second place as a team with 93 points, finishing only behind Silver Lake who won the tournament by a wide margin posting 167.5 points. Oskaloosa and the host Onaga finished third and fourth as teams with 72.5 and 70 points, respectively, while Republic County rounded out the Top five team performances. The remaining team performances finished with Riverside taking sixth, Garden Plain finishing seventh, Burlingame eighth, Immaculata took ninth, Maur Hill-Mount Academy placed 10th, Lincoln 11th, Wabaunsee 12th, Mission Valley 13th and Jeff West 14th.

A trio of first place finishes for Doniphan West paced them on their way to second place as a team at the Onaga Tournament, as Garret Dunlap, Kody Collins and Tristan Speer all finished first in their weight classes. Dunlap continued his strong start to the season by going 4-0 on the day and winning the 160lbs weight class, while Collins earned another first place finish, too this season going 5-0 and winning the 182lbs weight class. Speer moving into the 220lbs weight class this year wrestled a pair of matches on the day and earned first place going 2-0. Mustang grapplers also earned a third, fourth and two fifth place finishes on the day, also. Zeb Speer took home third place at 145lbs despite going only 1-2 on the day, while Malachi Manis place fourth at 132lbs with a 1-3 record on the day. Alex Martinez (152lbs) and Gabe Dunn (170lbs) each earned fifth place at their weight classes going 0-4 and 3-2 on the day.

Oskaloosa was paced on the day by three of second place performances as Triston Hopkins (106lbs), Jared Miller (145lbs) and Adam Perkins (220lbs) all finished second in their weight classes. Hopkins posted a 3-1 record on the day, while Miller went 2-1 and Perkins finished 1-1 on the mats. Dusty Bammes brought home third place at 138lbs, going 3-2, while Mark Nickels earned fourth place at 126lbs with a 2-2 record, also. Dante Nelson and Griffin Hayden both also placed for Oskaloosa finishing fourth and sixth at 182lbs and 195lbs, respectively after going 2-3 and 1-3 on the day.

Dustin Blow paced the Onaga Buffaloes at their home tournament as he wrestled his way to the win at 195lbs going 4-0 in action on the day. Three other Buffaloes finished second in their weight classes as Kyle Ames (182lbs), Jonathan Fairbanks (132lbs) and Brandon Merriman (113lbs) posted 4-1, 3-1 and 0-2 records, respectively (113lbs weight class only had two wrestlers compete). Garrett Ames grabbed a fourth place finish at 170lbs with a 3-2 record, while Tharrin D'Aloia and Jeffery Chestnut each notched fifth place showing at 106lbs and 138lbs, respectively posting 0-4 and 1-4 records on the day.

Riverside Cyclones had six Top six finishers on the day with Coleton Ruhl leading the charge with a first place finish on the mats at 132lbs going 4-0 on the day. Derrick Karn (120lbs) brought home second place going 3-1, while Scott Resler (126lbs) finished 4-1 claiming third place. A fourth place finish was earned by Braxton Goacher (195lbs) as he finished 3-2, while Spencer Norris (285lbs) and Donovan Duncan (182lbs) each placed sixth in their weight classes.

Immaculata, Maur Hill-Mount Acadmey and Jeff West all three finished the day with two guys notching Top six finishes on the mats at the Onaga Tournament.

Max Campbell highlighted the competition for Immaculata on the day as he wrestled his way to second place at 170lbs posting a 4-1 record, while Kristian Barrientos finished sixth at 126lbs going 2-3. While for Maur Hill-Mount Academy Chance Montgomery (152lbs) and Cole Harris (285lbs) finished second and fourth, respectively posting 3-1 and 2-3 records on the day. Jeff West Tigers Kody Gibson (120lbs) and Mason Seals (195lbs) both claimed fifth place showings in their weight classes.
