KBCA Releases Latest Rankings With 16 Area Teams Ranked -- Dec. 14th

Now a few weeks into the high school basketball season and most teams have at least two games under their belt if not more and teams are figuring out what they need to work on early in the season to get better over the year. With the first few weeks in the books the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association has released its latest set of rankings and 16 area teams finding themselves in the rankings this week.

In Class 4A-Division II the Holton Wildcat girls and boys both continued to be ranked this week, while the Royal Valley girls, also remained in the rankings. After picking up the 63-50 win over ACCHS the Holton girls moved to 2-1 on the year and moved up one spot to seventh in the latest, polls while Royal Valley girls eked out the 53-50 win over Hiawatha on the road to move to 2-1 and fell to tenth in polls. The Holton boys routed ACCHS on the road in their last game to move to 2-1 and remain ranked sixth in the polls, while the Atchison boys beat Savannah 51-40 to move to 1-1 on the year and jump into the rankings at eighth this week.

Class 3A continues to be highlighted by Nemaha Central and Sabetha from the area in the polls. The Nemaha Central girls suffered their first loss of the season falling 34-30 to Wamego on Friday, falling to 2-1 on the season and moving down to sixth in the rankings, while the Thunder boys hit a buzzer-beater three-pointer to take the 50-49 win over Wamego and remain unbeaten at 3-0 and continue to be ranked fifth. The Sabetha Bluejay boys moved up to seventh this week after moving to 3-0 on the season with a 53-43 road win over Jeff West.

Both Washington County Tigers teams continue to remain ranked in Class 2A, as the girls moved to 4-0 on the season winning the Thunderbird Invitational over the weekend beating Smith Center 48-31 on Saturday and remain ranked second. The Tiger boys also won the Thunderbird Invitational beating Pike Valley 59-48 on Saturday to move to 3-1, but fell two spots in the rankings to tenth. The Jefferson County North lady Chargers are the only other area team ranked and have been all season, as they sit at 3-0 after beating Horton 45-40 back on Friday. The Chargers moved up three spots in the rankings this week jumping from ninth to sixth in Class 2A.

In Class 1A-Division I five Twin Valley League teams continue to be ranked this week as both Valley Heights and Centralia teams are ranked and the Hanover boys, also. Valley Heights girls remain unbeaten on the season sitting at 3-0 are remain ranked second, while the Mustang boys are 2-1 and moved up one spot to fifth, this week. The Centralia boys remained unbeaten on the year picking up the 49-19 win over Wetmore on Friday to move to 4-0 and remain ranked third, while the Panther girls are 3-1 and picked up the 45-32 win over Wetmore back on Friday, moving them up one spot to eighth this week. Hanover boys needed overtime to beat Troy on the road 55-50 to remain unbeaten on the year at 3-0 and remain ranked number one.

Class 1A-Division II only has one team in the rankings this week and that is the Axtell lady Eagles who jump into the rankings for the first time this season, checking in at tenth after a 5-1 start to the season. The Eagles took care of Bishop Seabury on Saturday winning 59-28 and picked up a big road win at Linn on Friday, 52-49.

The high school basketball season continues this week before the holiday break and the rankings will be released one final time for the holidays early next week.
