Wetmore Girls & Frankfort Boys Notch Wins to Split Twinbill

The Wetmore Cardinals travelled to Frankfort to face off with the Wildcats on the court and teams would split on the evening, as the Wetmore girls held off Frankfort for the 51-44 win and the Frankfort boys picked up their first win of the season 59-40.

It was a slow start to the night for both teams in the girls matchup as Wetmore pushed out to an 8-0 lead before Frankfort finally broke the seal on the basket and got on the board. The shooting woes continued in the second quarter for the Wildcats as Wetmore outscored them 11-2, to take the 24-9 lead into halftime. In the second half Frankfort came out firing and started to see shots fall including 4-5 three-pointers in the quarter and drew within five points late in the third, going into the fourth down 34-27. Frankfort continue to push Wetmore drawing within five points, multiple times in the fourth but the Cardinals fend the Wildcats off multiple times to secure the 51-44 win.

With the win the Cardinals improved to 3-2 on the season and were paced by sophomore, Dakota McQueen who tallied 20 points, 12 in first half, earning her Community National Bank "Player to Bank On" honors on KMZA. Senior, Keri Pfrang chipped nine points, while freshman McKayla Henry added eight points for Wetmore. In the loss Frankfort was led by junior, Abra Shirley who scored 17 points, while Rebecca Adams chipped in 11 points and junior, Maura Kennedy added nine points. The Wildcats with the loss fell to 0-4 on the season, still in search of their first win of the year.

Frankfort boys started off fast and never looked back against Wetmore answering the Cardinals run in the second to secure their first win of the season. The Wildcats used the size advantage with senior, Jacob Studer in the paint early as he score 10 of the teams 18 points in the first period and Frankfort lead 18-7 after one quarter. The Wildcats pushed the lead out to 31-14 at the half over Wetmore, but Cardinals junior, Dalton Boeckman turned up the scoring in the third quarter hitting six three's for all of his 18 points helping Wetmore make it 46-34 after three quarters. Frankfort clamped down in the fourth and finished the game with a 13-6 fourth quarter to earn the 59-40 win.

The win was the first of the season for Frankfort moving them to 1-3 on the year and 1-1 in League play, also. Studer paced the team on the night with 20 points and being a force on the boards, earning him Community National Bank "Player to Bank On" honors on KMZA radio. Fellow seniors, Alex Roeder and Jake Rose also registered double-figures with 15 and 10 points, respectively. Wetmore in the loss was led by Boeckman who scored all his 18 points in the third quarter on six three-pointers; with the loss the Cardinals fell to 1-4 on the season.

As the holiday break approaches both teams have one final game for the break this coming Friday, as Wetmore travels to Washington County and Frankfort travels to Rossville.
