2015 TVL Basketball Tournament -- Quarterfinals

The 2015 Twin Valley League tournament continued on Monday with the Quarterfinals at Onaga high school and a few upsets happened on Monday.

Girls

#8 Wetmore vs. #1 Washington County            (Washington County won 61-33)

The Washington County Tigers have won three of the last four TVL tournament titles (Valley Heights won last year) and came into this year's tournament as the number seed and looked like it in the Quarterfinals against Wetmore, handing the Cardinals the 61-33 loss. The Tigers pounced on the Cardinals early leading 15-2 after the first quarter and 27-9 at halftime on their way to a spot in the Semifinals. With the win Washington County moves to 10-0 on the year and was led by Erin Alexander who scored 18 points, while Heidi Stegman chipped in 10 points and Taylor Powell added nine points. Wetmore in the loss fell to 5-6 on the year and was led by Dakota McQueen who scored eight points.

#5 Troy vs. #4 Axtell                     (Axtell won 43-34)

The lady Trojans of Troy took the early 4-0 advantage but Axtell hit three, three-pointers in the first quarter and took the lead 14-6 and continued to add to that lead in the game fending off Troy throughout the matchup on their way to a 43-34 win. Behind balance scoring and defense the Eagles earned the win as eight different gals scored, led by Taylor Feldkamp who tallied 11 points for Axtell as they improved to 11-2 with the win. Troy in the loss was led by Breanna Smith and Madi Marriott who both posted 10 points, as Troy fell to 6-4 on the season. 

#7 Linn vs. #2 Valley Heights        (Linn won 58-50 in Overtime) 

It was the first big upset as far as seeding goes in the TVL tournament this year as the seven seed Linn topped the two seed Valley Heights in overtime 58-50. The Mustangs playing their first full game since the injury to Brandi Jo Roepke, looked to stay unbeaten on the season and were up 24-18 at the half. But a strong second half by Linn pushed them ahead and ultimately to overtime, as it was the first overtime game of the touranment this year. The Bulldogs posted a 12-4 overtime and grabbed the 58-50 win. Linn in the win was led by Nicole Ohlde who scored 18 points, while Rachel Bott scored 16 points and Kesiah Thalmann chipped in 12 points, as Linn improved to 6-3. Valley Heights took their first loss of the season falling to 8-1 on the year, as Sidney Blackburn led them with 23 points in the loss, while Kayla Smith chipped in 15 points.

#6 Doniphan West vs. #3 Centralia          (Centralia won 59-38) 

A quick start by the Centralia Panthers pushed them out to take control early of the game against Doniphan West the Panthers did not let go of control on their way to the 59-38 win. Amaris Jones paced the Centralia offense early with nine of the teams 15 points in the first quarter, as Centralia led 15-8 after the first period. That lead grew with a 16-4 second quarter and the Panthers led 31-12 at the half. The win pushes Centralia to 8-1 on the year, as the Panthers have won eight in a row, led by Liz Hasenkamp led the Panthers as she tallied 17 points, hitting four three-pointers. Katie Glatczak and Amaris Jones each added 13 points, while Cassidy Haufler scored nine points. Doniphan West with the loss falls to 5-4 on the season and was led by Regan Gibson who scored 13 points, while McKenzie Blevins added 10 points.

Boys

#9 Frankfort vs. #1 Hanover          (Hanover won 75-49) 

Using a strong start to the game Hanover took control early with a 23-11 first quarter against Frankfort in the Quarterfinals and led 48-27 at the half on their way to the 75-49 win to remain unbeaten on the year. The win pushed Hanover to 9-0 on the season and was also Hanover head coach, Kim Loshe's 400th career victory. Andrew Bruna paced Hanover in the battle of the Wildcats as he posted 18 points, while Trey Loshe scored 14 points and Hunter Nicholson chipped in 9 points. Frankfort with the loss falls to 4-7 on the year and was led by Jacob Studer in the loss as he tallied 13 points, along with Adam Kenworthy who added 13 points himself, also.

#5 Troy vs. #4 Doniphan West           (Doniphan West won 60-55) 

In the battle of Doniphan County it was the Doniphan West Mustangs claiming the victory as the Mustangs continue to play well this year in their best season in multiple years. Both teams opened the game hitting shots but it was Doniphan West holding the 22-17 lead over Troy after one period and the Mustangs would fend off the Trojan runs to earn the 60-55 win. Jeffery Watts helped push Doniphan West to the early lead with three three-point field goals in the first quarter and tallied 16 points in the Mustang win, while Austin Taylor added 16 points, also. Lane Spiker and Cooper Leach each posted double figures, as well notching 12 and 10 points, respectively as Doniphan West improved to 7-2 on the season. With the loss Troy fell to 7-3 on the year, as they were led by Collin Jasper who scored 15 points, while Nathan Gaarder added 11 points and Jake Ross tallied 10 points.

#7 Onaga vs. #2 Centralia                 (Onaga won 50-38) 

The Onaga Buffaloes after a first round win on Saturday used the energy from their home crowd on Monday to hand Centralia their first loss of the season, as the Buffaloes as the seven seed topped the two seed, 50-38. The Buffaloes worked out to a 22-16 lead at the half and behind a trio of guys in double figures improved to 7-3 on the year. Wyatt Cordell paced Onaga with 15 points, while Jarod Gronewoller and Lucas Helget posted 13 and 12 points, respectively. Centralia with the loss fell to 8-1 on the season and was led by John Johnson who scored 15 points.

#6 Valley Heights vs. #3 Washington County             (Washington County won 64-58) 

It was a seesaw affair early between Valley Heights and Washington County with both teams trading leads, as Washington County lead 14-13 after the first quarter and Valley Heights led 29-28 at halftime. The third quarter was just like the first half back and forth for a while until Washington County converted on a few more offensive possessions to post 19-12 quarter to hold the 47-41 lead after three. That lead would hold as Washington County held off Valley Heights for the 64-58 win. Konner Penning led the Tigers with 20 points, while Kyle McGatlin and Zach Otott each posted 13 points in the win as Washington County moved to 9-1. While, Valley Heights fell to 6-4 on the season as Elijah Smith led the Mustangs with 24 points, while Logan Woodyard chipped in 15 points.
