2015 TVL Basketball Tournament -- Centralia Girls & Hanover Boys Claim League Tourney Titles

The Twin Valley League tournament wrapped up this year on Saturday and it proved to be once again a great week full of basketball at Onaga high school this year.

Consolation Game -- #13 Onaga vs. #9 Hanover               (Hanover won 59-26) 

The game started off to be a close matchup as Hanover just held the 13-8 lead after the first quarter over Onaga, but a 13-4 second quarter by the Wildcats allowed Hanover to take firm control of the game against Onaga, leading 26-12 at the half. That lead grew even further for Hanover behind a 21-9 third quarter and the Wildcats went on to grab the 59-26 win. Ten girls registered one-point or more for Hanover in the win as Riley Doebele paced the way with 11 points and both Pamela Zarybnicky and Ashton Jueneman each scored nine points. The win moves Hanover to 5-6 on the year and finished the TVL tourney with a 2-1 record in the tournament. Onaga in the loss was led by Taylor Kufahl who scored 11 points, as the Buffalos fell to 0-11 on the year and went 0-3 in the tournament.

Consolation Game -- #12 Frankfort vs. #10 Clifton-Clyde         (Frankfort won 57-43)

A tight ball game early saw multiple swings of momentum ultimately leading to a Frankfort 57-43 win over Clifton-Clyde. The Wildcats led 13-12 after the first quarter but the Eagles answered with a 16-10 second quarter to lead at the half. Frankfort responded to start the second half and held Clifton-Clyde to just five points in the third quarter, outscoring them 15-5 to help propel them to the win. Abra Shirley led the Wildcats posting 19 points in the win as Frankfort improved to 3-9 on the year and closed the tournament out with a 2-1 tourney record. Clifton-Clyde fell to 3-9 with the loss and went 0-3 in the tournament, as Baylie Bowser led the Eagles in the loss against Frankfort scoring nine points.

7th Place Game -- #6 Doniphan West vs. #5 Troy             (Troy won 44-24) 

A strong start to the game and ultimately a huge third quarter pushed Troy to a seventh place at the TVL tournament as the Trojans topped Doniphan West 44-24. Troy started the action off with a 15-7 first quarter and led 22-12 at the half. With a 19-0 third quarter Troy put no doubt who was in control of the game on their way to the win. The hot shooting from three-point land of Blair Weishaar paced the Trojans as she six three's for 18 points in the win, while Alex Winder added 12 points. With the win Troy improved to 7-5 on the year and went 2-2 in the tournament for seventh place. Doniphan West in the loss was led by Regan Gibson who scored 11 points, while the Mustangs fell to 5-6 on the year and took eighth this year in the tourney going 1-3.

5th Place Game -- #8 Wetmore vs. #2 Valley Heights           (Wetmore won 61-55)

Three gals in double figures and a strong performance from the free throw line pushed the Wetmore Cardinals to a big win over Valley Heights to earn fifth place in the TVL tournment, claiming the 61-55 win. Wetmore held the 27-21 lead at the half and despite Valley Heights cutting into that lead multiple times in the second half the Cardinals held them off for the win. Dakota McQueen continued to lead Wetmore posting a new season best with 28 points, hitting three three-pointers and going 9-10 from the free throw line. Keri Pfrang chipped in 11 points and McKayla Henry added 10 points for the Cardinals in the win as Wetmore improved to 7-6 on the year and took fifth in the tourney going 3-1 in the tourney. Valley Heights with the loss fell to 9-2 on the year and took sixth in the tourney with a 1-2 record, as Kayla Smith posted her best game with 28 points, going 8-10 from the free throw line, while Sidney Blackburn chipped in 15 points.

3rd Place Game -- #7 Linn vs. #4 Axtell                 (Axtell won 42-39) 

Despite not having their top player the Linn Bulldogs made it interesting against Axtell as the teams faced off for third place at the League tournament. Axtell clung to a 10-8 lead after the first quarter and extended that going into halftime with a 17-10 second quarter. But a 10-5 third quarter by Linn cut the lead to four for Axtell after three quarters and the Eagles had to hold off Linn down the stretch to claim the win and third place in the tournament going 3-1 in tourney action after the 42-39 win over Linn. The win moved Axtell to 12-3 on the season and was led by Courtney Heinen who scored 16 points, while Kiersten Talbot chipped in 11 points. Linn with the loss fell to 6-5 on the year and wrapped up the tournament with a fourth place finish going 2-2. Rachel Bott led Linn in the loss with 12 points against Axtell.

Championship -- #3 Centralia vs. #1 Washington County           (Centralia won 50-46)

Washington County was looking to win their fourth TVL tourney title in the last five years, but the Centralia Panthers were on the prowl for their first League tourney title since 2009 and tenth overall. Early establishment of a post presence by Centralia and early assertiveness by Amaris Jones pushed Centralia to a 27-18 lead at the half. The Panthers also shut down and frustrated Erin Alexander for Washington County holding her scoreless in the first half. Washington County didn't go away as the Tigers clawed back but ultimately the Panthers made plays down the stretch to secure the 50-46 win and claim the TVL tournament title. With the win Centralia improves to 9-1 on the season extending their win streak to nine-straight, going 3-0 in the tournament. Jones paced the Panthers with 18 points, while Mayda Stallbaumer added 10 points. Washington County with the loss fall to 11-1 on the year and take second in the TVL tournament for the second straight year, as Heidi Stegman led the Tigers in the loss with 11 points.

Boys

Consolation Game -- #13 Clifton-Clyde vs. #8 Axtell                  (Axtell won 50-28) 

The Axtell Eagles despite falling in the opening round of the tournament come out with a 2-1 record in the TVL tourney after a pair of consolation game victories, including a 50-28 win over Clifton-Clyde on Saturday. In the battle of the Eagles it was Axtell jumping out to a 25-15 lead at the half and cruising to the win from that point on hitting six three's in the game and having eight guys score in the contest. With the win Axtell moved to 8-6 on the year and were led by Adam Kuckelman who scored 18 points, while Colton Buessing added nine points. Clifton-Clyde took the loss and fell to 0-12 on the season and went 0-3 in the tournament, as Andrew Seifert led the Eagles with 13 points in the loss.

Consolation Game -- #12 Blue Valley vs. #10 Linn               (Linn won 48-12)

A strong start to the game by Linn packed with a pair of highlight dunks by Chad Gross was all the Bulldogs needed to sail past Blue Valley 48-12 to grab the win. Linn worked out to an 11-3 lead after the first quarter and behind a 20-3 second quarter took firm control of the game on the way to improving to 4-6 on the season and went 2-1 in the tournament. Chase McGatlin led the Bulldogs in the contest with 13 points, while Blue Valley had just three guy’s score in the game each with four points. The Rams with the loss fell to 2-9 and went 1-2 in the tournament.

7th Place Game -- #9 Frankfort vs. #6 Valley Heights            (Valley Heights won 76-49)

The Mustangs came out of the gate charging and behind a 20-point first quarter and 22-point second quarter worked out to a 42-21 lead at the half against Frankfort and that proved to be to much for Frankfort to overcome, as Valley Heights earned the 76-49 win grabbing seventh place in the TVL tournament. Leading the way for Valley Heights was Keaton DeWalt who posted 22 points, while Elijah Smith chipped in 17 points and Payton Manley added 14 points. With the win Valley Heights moved to 7-5 on the year and went 2-2 in the tournament. While Frankfort with the loss is now 4-9 and went 1-3 in the tournament, as three guys did score double figures in the loss to Valley Heights with 13 points from Alex Roeder, 12 points from Adam Kenworthy and 11 points from Jacob Studer.

5th Place Game -- #5 Troy vs. #2 Centralia                        (Troy won 51-44)

Centralia pounced early on Troy and led 13-7 after the first quarter, but Troy answered right back with a 15-9 second quarter to make it a 22-22 game at halftime. The game stayed a back and forth affair in the second half as teams trade buckets and leads, but at the end of three quarter's it was Troy leading 36-34. Troy closed out the game with a 13-8 fourth quarter and grabbed the 51-44 win over Centralia to claim fifth place in the TVL tournament. Troy was led by Collin Jasper who scored 10 points as the team improved to 9-3 on the year and went 3-1 in the tournament. Centralia in the loss was led by Braden Deters who posted 12 points, while John Johnson added 10 points. The Panthers with the loss fell to 9-2 on the year and went 1-2 in the tournament.

3rd Place Game -- #7 Onaga vs. #4 Doniphan West               (Onaga won 50-47)

Onaga Buffalos jumped out early and took advantage of Doniphan West's struggles to establish a 26-14 lead at the half. That lead moved to 13-points after three quarter's but the Mustangs didn't go away quietly as shots started to fall in the fourth quarter and the Mustangs posted a 26-point quarter, getting within one-point late, but a few free throws helped Onaga secure the 50-47 win as Doniphan West threw up a deep three for a potential to force overtime but misfired. The duo of Jarod Gronewoller and Mitchell Duer paced Onaga with 11 points each, as Onaga improved to 8-4 on the season with the win and took third in the tourney going 3-1 in the tournament. Doniphan West like Onaga improved their finish in the TVL tournament this year drastically finishing fourth with a 2-2 record in the tournament to move to 7-4 on the year. Cooper Leach led the Mustangs with 20 points in the loss, while Austin Taylor added 13 points.

Championship -- #3 Washington County vs. #1 Hanover              (Hanover won 65-63 in Overtime)

It didn't come easy but Hanover defended their TVL tournament title and won their fifth in last seven years. Both teams traded buckets and runs early until Hanover went on a run to take a 34-28 lead into halftime. The Wildcats added to that lead heading into the fourth leading 49-41, but behind a 17-9 fourth quarter Washington County fought back and tied the game to force overtime. In overtime Washington County to early control until Hanover pushed back and as the clock ticked closer to zero, Hanover's Will Bruna drove to the basket and drew the foul with under a second left in the game. Bruna stepped to the line made both free throws to help Hanover earn the 65-63 win in overtime. Bruna led the Wildcats with 23 points, while Austin Diederich chipped in 17 points, as Hanover improved to 11-0 on the season and went 3-0 in the tournament. Washington County with the loss fell to 10-2 and went 2-1 in the tournament taking second place. The Tigers were led by Kyle McGatlin who posted 20 points, while Cole Thompson scored 14 points; Zach Otott added 12 points and Konner Penning chipped in 10 points.
