Valley Falls Claims Oskaloosa Invite Championship in Overtime Thriller
By Jonny Kane

The Oskaloosa Invitational concluded on Saturday afternoon with the Valley Falls Dragon claiming first place knocking off Jefferson County North 59-58 in overtime of the championship game.

Championship: Valley Falls 59, Jefferson County North 58

The final two teams of the Oskaloosa Invite went to battle on Saturday with neither team being able to gain the advantage early on in the matchup. Bryce Noll started off hot for the Chargers as the junior compiled 7 points in first quarter on his way to 15 points at the halftime break. Valley Falls was the team on top at the break though because of the play of junior Ty Gatzemeyer who scored 8 points in the second quarter to give the Dragons a 24-20 lead after two quarters.

Noll was held in check in the third quarter as he was only able to scrape across one point in the quarter but luckily for JCN juniors Elijah Meyer and Nick Funk picked up where he left off as the duo combined for 12 points in the third to keep the Valley Falls lead to just 5 heading into the fourth. The fun really started in the fourth quarter after the Dragons built their lead to 12 points. Noll and senior Shawn Lane traded baskets with each other for the Chargers to pull the score back to even at 50 points a piece. Then with 24 seconds to go Lane stole an inbound pass after Gatzemeyer got tripped up and was fouled going to the basket with 21 seconds left. Lane calmy knocked down both free throws to put JCN up two and with 1 second left Marty Gatzemeyer drove to the basket and was fouled giving him two free throws and a chance to tie the game. After two Charger timeouts Marty knocked down both free throws to send the championship game into overtime.

The overtime period was much like the end of the fourth quarter as both teams traded baskets throughout. Valley Falls held the lead at four with 2:00 to go but back-to-back-to-back buckets by Lane and Noll put the Chargers back on top 58-57 with 26 seconds left. After a missed shot by Valley the Dragons were forced to foul as it was Noll who had the chance to seal the win with a coulple of free throws but both shots rolled out giving Valley Falls a chance to win. At this point in the ballgame both Marty and Ty Gatzemeyer have fouled out so it was up to the rest of the Dragon squad to get the job done. On the ensuing inbound play Head Coach Caleb Gatzemeyer drew up a perfect play as Zac Allen received the pass and handed it off to Grant Haag who drove down the middle of the lane for the game winning layup giving Valley Falls the 59-58 overtime win.

Valley Falls was lead in the win by junior Marty Gatzemeyer who had 17 points while fellow junior Zac Allen had 16 and Ty Gatzemeyer 10. In the loss for the Chargers they were lead in scoring by junior Bryce Noll who lead all scorers with 25 points while Shawn Lane chipped in 14 points in the losing effort.

3rd Place Game: Perry Lecompton 55, Oskaloosa 38

The third place game was never really in doubt from the start as Perry got off to strong first quarter leading 17-12 after one quarter. The Kaws then extended that lead to 9 points in the second quarter but a three at the buzzer by Oskaloosa's Luis Rodriguez made it just a 6 point game at the half. Once again Perry came out strong in the third quarter as they built their lead back to 12 after three quarters leading 42-30. The Kaws were then able to extend their lead to 17 points in the final quarter en route to a 55-38 win as they claimed third place.

Perry Lecompton was lead in scoring by Seth Surface as the senior poured in 23 points while Jacob Morgison finished with 12 points along with Mitchel Bond who was also in double figures with 10 points of his own. For Oskaloosa Luis Rodriguez was the only player to reach double figures as the senior had 18 points in the loss.

5th Place Game: ACCHS 42, Cornerstone 34

The ACCHS Tigers picked up their first win of the 2014-15 season on Saturday as they claimed fifth in the tournament winning 42-34. The Tigers who have struggled to score all year recieved a huge boost in the second half from Sophomore Lane Bowen as he drained four straight three pointers to put ACCHS ahead for good. It was also the first win for Tiger Head Coach Sterling Jackson who is in his first season at the helm.
