Jeff West Grapplers Take Third While Royal Valley & Maur Hill Compete at Piper Invitational

Three area teams hit the mats on Saturday as part of the Tyler Jobe Memorial Tournament at KC Piper and the Jeff West Tiger grapplers came away with a third place finish as a team in a 13 team field for the day.

The Tigers posted 176 total points easily taking third, but finished behind Wellsville (253) and Blue Valley Southwest (211) who placed first and second respectively. The Royal Valley Panthers and Maur Hill-Mount Academy Ravens also competed on the day and placed eighth and 13th, respectively.

A pair of individual champions led Jeff West at Piper high school on Saturday as both Nicholas Reeb (152lbs) and Sam Shenk (195lbs) registered first place finishes. Reeb was a perfect 5-0 on the day opening the action with a 6-1 decision win and followed that up with three consecutive pinfall wins (1:25, :23 and 2:45) to make the Championship bout. In the finals Reeb continued to perform well picking up his fourth pinfall win of the day, winning in 2:40 for first place. Shenk also went 5-0 on the day with all five wins coming via pinfall; his fast victory was his first coming in just eight seconds, while he also won in 53 seconds, 1:51, 5:58 and 3:10.

Branden Callahan (126lbs) and Michael Majors (285lbs) both earned second place finishes for the Tigers.as 3-1 record on the mats with two pinfall wins (3:28 and 2:25), while also picking up a 8-1 decision win. Majors notched a 1-1 record on the day to finish second, with his lone win coming via pinfall in 31 seconds. Seven more Tigers earned Top eight finishes on the day with two fourth place finishes, a pair of sixth places, two seventh's and one eighth place. Lucas Holloman (106lbs) and Austin Michaelis (113lbs) each earned fourth place showing after 2-2 and 2-3 days on the mat, respectively. Both Tyler Casto (138lbs) and Nathan Taylor (145lbs) each picked up sixth place finishes as they both posted 1-3 records. Mason Heiden (160lbs) and Ryan Wisner (132lbs) grabbed seventh place finishes for the Tigers, as both guys went 2-3 on the mats. Kody Gibson (120lbs) also notched a Top eight finish finishing eighth place going 1-4 on the day.

Six Royal Valley Panthers grabbed Top eight finishes on the mats on Saturday at KC Piper high school, as ranked Panther grappler, Matthew Bailey (182lbs) continued his strong season by winning his weight class going 4-0 on the day. Bailey opened the day with three pinfall wins in 3:04, 1:32 and 3:48 to earn a spot in the Championship bout where he posted another pinfall win to claim in the title at 182lbs, winning in 5:18 in the Finals. Blake Garrison (195lbs) put together the second best day for the Panthers taking home third place after going 3-2, with two pinfall wins (4:00 and :49) and a technical fall win in 17-1. Both Tim Martin Jr. (120lbs) and Lance Bailey (126lbs) earned fourth place finishes for Royal Valley after going 3-2 and 2-2, respectively on the mats. Garrett Rodewald (160lbs) and Cedrick Williams (152lbs) wrapped up the rest of the Top eight finishes for Royal Valley placing fifth and seventh, respectively after each going 3-2.

A fourth place and pair of eighth place finishes highlighted the day for Maur Hill as Jose Soto (138lbs) led the Ravens placing fourth after going 2-2 on the day. Both Blake Wilson (132lbs) and Benedict Humburg (126lbs) placed eighth for the Ravens.

All three teams will continue their wrestling season later this week either on Thursday or Saturday.
