Hiawatha Girls Invite Day 2 Recap

It was second round action at the 38th Annual Hiawatha Girls Invitational on Thursday night and Nemaha Central and Hiawatha advanced to the Championship game at 2:30 on Saturday afternoon in the Roundhouse.

Semifinal = Hiawatha 48, Falls City 25
Hiawatha scored on the opening tip and never trailed in the game while Falls City had one of their worst shooting nights of the season. Molly Kettler hit four treys and scored 13 points in the first half and Hiawatha build a 28-13 advantage with a 16-6 third quarter run.  Emily Gartner ended the game with 20 points as Hiawatha won their third straight game to climb back above .500 at 6-5.  Falls City got 8 points off the bench from Molly Brown but making 2 of 13 at the line was how the shooting woes unfolded for the 10-7 Lady Tigers.  

Semifinal = Nemaha Central 60, Marysville 47
Nemaha jumped out of the game with a 20-7 first quarter, getting 14 points from Jaci Swart and forcing 10 Marysville turnovers.  The Thunder stretched the margin to a 36-16 lead at the intermission as Swart posted 21 points in the half and Marysville ended the half with 17 of their total 26 turnovers for the game.  Swart finished with 23 points, a new season high, while Rachel Baumgartner and Mariah Rottinghaus added 7 each and Nemaha improved to 8-4 on the season.  Marysville dropped to 3-9 with the setback and was led in scoring by Claire Cudney with 13 and 9 each from Ally Kort and Sydney Pacha.    

Consolation = Jackson Heights 52, Riverside 39
Despite leading the entire game after a 17-17 tie in the second quarter, Jackson Heights could not pull away from Riverside until about 3 minutes left to go.  The Lady Cobras led 43-37 until a 9-0 run put the game away and stretched the lead to double digits.  Jessica Keehn scored 23 points as Jackson Heights improved to 5-6.  Sasha Perry had 10 in the highest scoring loss for Riverside (0-11) this season.  

Consolation = Horton 40, Rock Creek 35 
Horton and Rock Creek played a very close game from start to finish with the score tied at 17 at halftime and the Chargers taking a one-point lead in the final minute.  Horton made free throws down the stretch and held on for the victory as Kaitlyn McAfee scored 15 points improving the Chargers to 5-6 on the season.
