It was a Big 7 League rematch from December 19th, but this time on Sweetheart night at the Roundhouse, the Hiawatha girls avenged a 25 point loss and upset #5 rankedSabetha, while the Bluejays boys (#4) had a monster second half to pull away for the road win and remain undefeated in League play.

GIRLS = Hiawatha 47, Sabetha 45
The Lady Redhawks got a three-pointer from Molly Kettler to take an 8-6 lead at the end of the first quarter and started the second stanza on a 12-0 run to go ahead 20-6.  Sabetha battled back to make it 24-17 at halftime and a trifecta by Alexis McAfee made it 26-25 early in the second half. Yet, Hiawatha responded to every charge Sabetha made and built back a 37-32 advantage entering the fourth quarter.

 The Lady Jays pulled within 47-45 with under :50 to play and fouled Courtney Brockoff, who missed the front-end of a one-and-one free throw.  Yet, a driving basket to tie the game by McAfee was wiped off with a traveling call and Hiawatha continued to lead.  The Redhawks avoided at least two potential turnovers and back-court violations in the closing :30 as first year Coach Brady Jasper used his final timeouts and Hiawatha found a way to keep the basketball.  After missing an open layup with :03 left, Kendra Overdick, who had 5 big points in the third quarter, earned a jump ball on the rebound and Hiawatha was tied up on the ensuing inbounds play with 1.5 remaining.  McAfee got a half court shot off at the buzzer, but it missed, and the Lady Hawks handed Sabetha their first Big 7 loss and defeated their rival Bluejays for the first time since January of 2008.

Hiawatha, winners in 6 of ther last 8 games, made 8 of 12 free throws in the second half and got another moster night from junior, Emily Gartner, who posted 25 points and 14 rebounds and made several key saves with the basketball down the stretch.  Freshman, Cariann Kunkel, added 10 points off the bench as both teams battled some foul trouble throughout the game.  The Redhawks improved to 9-7 overall and 6-6 in league play desipte 18 turnovers.

McAfee was held without a field goal in the first half but finished with 9 of her 17 points in the fourth quarter to give Sabetha a chance. Rhianna Becker added 9 points, but the Lady Jays made only 2 of 16 treys on the night before falling to 14-2 on the season and 11-1 in the Big 7.

BOYS = Sabetha 56, Hiawatha 39
It was a slow start for both boys teams with Sabetha holding a 7-4 lead at the end of one quarter. Hiawatha went on a 7-2 run to lead 11-9 and was ahead 14-12 when a foul, followed by a technical, turned the game in Sabetha's favor.  Kegan Schumann hit three free throws and then a trifecta's for a six-point possession to capitalize, and the Bluejays went up 18-14 at halftime.  After making only one three-pointer in the first half, the Jays knocked down five in the third quarter while outscoring Hiawatha 22-10 to pull out to a double-digit lead for good.
