Hiawatha Takes Two Over ACCHS
By Jonny Kane

It was senior night in Effingham, Kansas on Friday as ACCHS hosted Hiawatha in Big 7 League play and the visitors weren't too kind to the Tigers as they left with a pair of wins.

Girls: Hiawatha 44, ACCHS 32

The Hiawatha girls were looking to avenge a Jan. 9 loss to ACCHS in Hiawatha,  and they got off to a good start by taking a 7-2 lead after the first quarter. ACCHS then played much better in the second, but Emily Gartner had 13 points in the first half to give Hiawatha a 24-13 advantage at the break.

The two teams then came out in the third quarter and scored 11 points a piece to make a 35-24 score heading into the final frame. The Lady Tigers had plenty of chances to make it a ballgame late, but too many missed shots and free throws ultimately allowed Hiawatha to come away with the 44-32 win.

Gartner once again led Hiawatha in scoring as the junior finished with 26 points while going 6 of 7 from the charity stripe, as Hiawatha moved to 11-7 overall with the win. Then for ACCHS they lost their fourth straight moving them to 11-6 on the season as they were paced in scoring by Lillie Holtgrave's 11 points

Boys: Hiawatha 58, ACCHS 22

The boys game was never in doubt from the opening tip as Hiawatha jumped out to an 18-3 advantage after the first quarter and leading 35-8 at the break. ACCHS was able to put together a decent third quarter, but it was too much Hiawatha in the end as the Redhawks cruised to a 58-22 win in the nightcap.

In the win, Hiawatha moved to 5-13 overall and were led in scoring by Joseph Kunkel and Conner Winters, as the junior duo combined to score 12 points a piece. Then for ACCHS they moved their record to 1-16 with the loss after being led in scoring by senior Kyle Kimmi and sophomore Ryder McAlexander's 7 points a piece.
--------------------
Looking ahead for both sides the ACCHS guys currently sit as the eight seed in the Class 3A Sub-State at Sabetha, while the girls are in the fourth spot. The Tigers have two more games that will count towards those records as they will host Royal Valley on Monday in a makeup game, before finishing things up by traveling to Riverside on Tuesday.

Then for Hiawatha the boys are currently the seven seed in that sub-state at Sabetha while the girls are a game back of ACCHS in the loss column in the five spot. The Redhawks only have one more game that counts towards that sub-state seeding and that will be on Tuesday night when they host the Holton Wildcats.
