Centralia Closes Out Regular Season with Pair of Wins Over Onaga

The regular season came to a end on Thursday night for both Centralia and Onaga and it the Panthers on their senior night coming away with a pair of wins headed into postseason action next week. The Lady Panthers pounced on Onaga early and cruised to the 67-40 win, while Centralia fended off an Onaga run in the second half to win 63-51.

The night started off with Centralia senior, Liz Hasenkamp lighting it up from three-point range hitting her first three three's to give Centralia an early 9-0 lead and the Panthers would outscore Onaga 24-8 in the first quarter. The Centralia lead grew to 37-17 headed into halftime as the Panthers used second chance points and six three-pointers in the first half to lead by 20. Onaga cut into the lead with an 11-7 third quarter, but Centralia cruised in the fourth quarter posting a 23-12 frame to earn the 67-40 win.

Eight different Panthers scored on the night as Cassidy Haulfer paced the way with 15 points, while Mayda Stallbaumer chipped in 13 points to help Centralia improve to 16-4 on the season and finish 9-3 in TVL play. Hasenkamp added 11 points on the night including her three three's to open the game earning her "Community National Bank" Player to Bank On honors on KMZA radio. Drew Kramer added nine points hitting three three-pointers coming off the bench. Onaga with the loss fell to 1-19 on the year and finish the year 0-12 in the TVL, as Taylor Kufahl led the Buffalos on the night with 14 points. Carley Wilhelm and Rebekah Glessner each added nine points for Onaga.

Centralia boys started the game jumping on Onaga but lead just 17-10 after the first quarter; that lead grew to 31-19 by halftime after a 14-9 second quarter for the Panthers. Senior, Darrian Turner paced the Panthers in the first half carving up the Onaga defense for 12 points in the first half. Onaga pushed back in the second half and drew within 10 points after three quarters, trailing 46-36. The Buffalos continued their push early in the fourth quarter getting within eight points, but Centralia pushed the lead back up to 13 and went on to grab the 12 point, 63-51 win at home.

With the win Centralia improve to 14-6 on the season and finish 9-3 in the TVL, as the duo of Turner and Wyatt VanDorn led the way with 15 points each to both earn "Community National Bank" Players to Bank on honors on KMZA. VanDorn rained in four three-pointers on his way to his 15 points. Joey Ferron joined Turner and VanDorn with double figures posting 10 points. The loss puts Onaga at 14-7 on the year and has them finish 6-6 in the TVL, as Lucas Helget led them with 13 points in the loss, while Jarod Gronewoller scored 10 points.

Both teams turn their attention to postseason play with Sub-State action next week. Onaga will play on Monday for the boys at Wakefield, while the girls will play Tuesday at Washington County, for Centralia they will not play until Thursday for the girls and Friday for the boys at Frankfort in the Semifinals of their Sub-State.
