Hiawatha Girls and Jeff West Boys Win Close Games Thursday

On January 16th both Jeff West teams won by five points at home against Hiawatha, but on Thursday night at the Roundhouse, the Redhawk girls avenged another loss and grabbed their fifth straight win while the Tiger boys prevailed by four on the road. 

GIRLS = Hiawatha 46, Jeff West 40

The Redhawks jumped to a 17-2 lead before only scoring 2 points in the second quarer and allowing Jeff West to get within 19-14 at halftime.  The Lady Tigers continued solid play and used a high-low attack with their pair of six-foot post players to take a 28-26 advantage into the fourth quarter. 

Emily Gartner however saved her best for last and scored 10 of her 21 points in the final frame including 7 of 11 free throws to give Hiawatha their 10th win in their last 12 games.  With the contest tied at 38, Courtney Brockoff hit her second triple of the night to give Hiawatha the lead for good.  She scored 11 points and Hiawatha was 11 of 17 from the foul line in the fourth quarter to earn the win. 

Jeff West got 13 points from Faith Becker and 10 by Mariah Murdie before falling to 8-11 overall and 6-9 in Big 7 League play.  Hiawatha has now beaten every team on their schedule at least once and finished 10-6 in the League with a 13-7 overall mark.

This game also had a quick start and the making of a blowout as the Tigers came  out strong in their first contest in nine days.  Jeff West went on a 16-0 run and led 17-4 after one quarter.  Hiawatha closed the gap to 26-21 at halftime and trailed 35-31 entering the final quarter.  Although the Hawks never led after a 3-2 advantage, they did tie the game at 40 with 2:22 to play. 

Jacob Dickey scored 7 of his 19 points in the fourth and made 7 of 10 free throws to help secure the win and Jeff West was 11 of 18 at the line as a team.  Hiawatha made only 8 of 18 charity tosses and had 16 turnovers before falling to 5-15 on the season and 3-13 in the Big 7.  Ethan Pierce scored 10 while Ryker Smith, Jacob Barnhart and Joseph Kunkel each added 7 for the Redhawks. 

Grady Middendorf scored 10 of his 11 points in the first half as the Tigers won for the third time in four games improving to 8-7 in League action and 8-11 overall.  Jeff West host Riverside in a makeup game on Friday night before sub state play next week.
