Hiawatha Hosts Three Other Big Seven Schools Track Action

The Hiawatha Red Hawks welcomed three other Big Seven schools to town in Sabetha, Perry Lecompton and Nemaha Central and they all competed in track and field action on Tuesday.

With over 90 points each the Nemaha Central girls and Sabetha boys claimed the meet team titles on the day at Hiawatha. The lady Thunder finished with 98 points, while Sabetha, Hiawatha and Perry Lecompton finished second, third and fourth, respectively. Sabetha boys finished with 94 points to take first, while Nemaha Central took second, Hiawatha third and Perry Lecompton fourth.

Leading the charge on the day was the Sabetha Bluejays who came home with 16 first place finishes between the boys and girls action on the track and in the field. The Sabetha girls 4x100 and 4x400 meter relay teams posted times of 55.87 and 4:42.21 to take first place, while the only two Bluejay individuals won multiple events as Keegan Cox who won both the 1600 and 3200 meter runs behind times of 5:04.14 and 11:10.05 and Treavor Schmelzle won both the high jump (5'08) and javelin (148'11). Sabetha boys also had a winner in the 400 meter dash and 800 meter run, as Ross Strathman posted a time of 57.67 to win the 400 and Corbin Cox won the 800 with a time of 2:14.34. The Bluejays boys also won the 4x100 meter relay notching a time of 48.21, while in the field events Jacob Leuthold won the shot put (46'02.75).

Nemaha Central brought home nine first place finishes at the Hiawatha track meet, as Rachael Baumgartner led the way winning three events. Baumgartner raced her way to wins in the 100 and 300 meter hurdles with times of 17.14 and 49.71, while vaulting to the pole vault win with a vault of 9'00. Shaylyn Stallbaumer was the only other lady Thunder to claim a win as she tossed her way to the win in the shot put (40'00.50). In the boy's competition, Jacob Koelzer led the Thunder winning the 100 meter dash with a time of 10.93, while leaping to the win in the long jump (20'03.75), also. Luke Haverkamp, Caleb Bradley and Abe Elder all also won events for Nemaha Central winning the 200 meter dash (24.70), pole vault (10'06) and triple jump (41'03.50), respectively.

For the host Hiawatha it was eight first place finishes on the day with five of the eight coming in the girl’s competition. Jordan Puvogel led the way for the Red Hawks sweeping the distance running, winning the 800, 1600 and 3200 meter runs behind times of 2:34.08, 5:48.14 and 11:10.05, while also being part of the 4x800 meter relay team that posted a time of 11:18.32 to claim first. Emily Gartner earned the other lady Red Hawk first place finish winning the discus with a toss of 149'08, setting a new school record; she also broke the school record in the shot put, but second in the competition. The Hiawatha boys were led by the performance of their 4x400 and 4x800 meter relay teams who behind times of 3:50.93 and 9:05.82 to win. Gavin Lierz also picked up a gold medal by winning the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 43.43.

Perry Lecompton registered three first place finishes in the competition on Tuesday as Abbi Folks, Braden Johanning and Torin Vannest won events. Folks leapt to the win in the girls triple jump (33'08), while Johanning won the boys discus (123'03) and Vannest won the 110 meter hurdles (17.34).
