Hiawatha, Horton & Valley Falls Compete at Rossville Track Invite

Weather altered the plans back on Friday but this time the weather was great on Monday as three area teams in Hiawatha, Horton and Valley Falls competed in the rescheduled Rossville track Invitational.

The Hiawatha Red Hawks came away with the best showing for the area teams as the Red Hawk boys took third as a team and the girl’s fourth out of 11 and 10 teams competing, respectively in the boys and girls action. Five first place performances led Hiawatha on the day as Jordan Puvogel won both the girls 1600 and 3200 meter runs with times of 5:25.06 and 11:54.64, while Brandt Houk won the boys 3200 meter run behind a time of 10:59.19 and the boy’s 4x800 meter relay team registered a time of 8:59.10 to claim gold. The other gold medal went to Brendan Steele of Hiawatha as he leapt his way to the long jump win behind a leap of 19'03, while also taking second in the javelin and fourth in the 200 meter dash. Houk added a second place finish in the 800 meter run on the day, while Gavin Lierz took second in the 400 meter dash and third in the 300 meter hurdles and Ryker Smith grabbed the bronze in the 800 meter run.

Nine other Top five finishes were earned by lady Red Hawks as Cariann Kunkel picked up three of them by taking third in both the high jump and javelin, while placing fifth in the long jump. Lady Red Hawks 4x800 meter relay team took third, while 4x400 took fourth place just like Kailey Davis and Molley Kettler did in the 400 meter dash and 1600 meter run, respectively. Aly Shamburg and Emma Williams each registered a fifth place showing coming in the 1600 meter run and 400 meter dash for Hiawatha.

Horton Chargers were led on the day by two first place finishes by Trey Dishon as he posted tosses of 48'04 and 148'06 to win the shot put and discus. Derrick Stone picked up two bronze medals taking third in the javelin and triple jump, while also placing fourth in the long jump for Horton, while Derek Richardson took fifth in the 100 meter dash.

A second place finish in the girls 200 meter dash led Valley Falls on the day as Emily Nottingham registered that finish along with a third place in the 100 meter dash, while Tamara Drinkard took fourth in the high jump. On the boys side Justin Myers took third in the 1600 meter run and fourth in the 800 meter run, while the Dragons placed third in the boys 4x400 and 4x800 meter relays and fourth in the 4x100.
