Nemaha Central Girls & Boys Sweep Titles at Sabetha Track Invite

The start gun fired off on Thursday and away teams went in track and field competition at the Sabetha Invitational looking to beat each other and Mother Nature to get all the events in. One event did not finish on the day as the girls pole vault was suspended due to weather and final results for that event will be announced early next week. 

At the end of the competitions on the day it was the Nemaha Central Thunder boys and girls picking up the sweep of the team crowns at the Sabetha Invitational. Behind 120 total points the Thunder boys took first place, while Sabetha finished second and Riverside took third. Auburn and Centralia rounded out the Top five boy’s team performances, while Falls City, Hiawatha, Horton, Marysville, Wetmore and Valley Falls finished out the standings in sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth, tenth and 11th.

The lady Thunder track squad notched 128 total points to lay claim to first place, while Hiawatha and Sabetha tied for second place with 100 total points each. Marysville and Auburn finished out the Top five taking fourth and fifth, while Centralia, Falls City, Valley Falls, Horton, Riverside and Wetmore finished out the standings in sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth, tenth and 11th.

Leading the way for Nemaha Central on the day was eight first place finishes helping the boys and girls take home first place finishes. Jacob Koelzer continued his strong track season sprinting to the win in the 100 meter dash yet again this year, posting a winning time of 10.79, while also winning the long jump with a leap of 21'00.50. The Thunder boys also picked up wins on the track with Colin Lierz winning the 800 meter run (2:04.50), Zach Bradley winning the 110 meter hurdles (14.86) and the 4x100 meter relay posting a time of 44.87 to win the gold. Caleb Bradley vaulted his way to a gold medal winning the pole vault behind a mark of 12'06. For the girls Allison Rottinghaus won the triple jump (35'00.25) and the lady Thunder also won the 4x100 meter relay (52.25).

Hiawatha claimed the most event wins on the day with nine between the girls and boys action. Both Jordan Puvogel and Emily Gartner continued to rack up multiple events wins at track meets each winning two individual events. Puvogel raced to wins in the 1600 and 3200 meter runs behind times of 5:25.25 and 12:13.80, while Gartner registered tosses of 39'02.50 and 132'07 to win the shot put and discus. Molly Kettler and Kailey Davis raced to wins in the 400 meter dash (1:02.80) and 800 meter run (2:34.79), respectively, while the lady Red Hawks also won the 4x800 meter relay (10:23.45). Brendan Steele picked up a first for the Hiawatha boys as he won the 400 meter dash (52.76) and the boys also won the 4x800 meter relay 8:41.46.

The host, Sabetha Bluejays saw six event winners on the day including Nicole Brey who sprinted to a pair of wins in the girls 100 and 200 meter dashes with times of 12.74 and 26.68. Meagan Garrett and Heidi Heiniger both continued to dominate the high jump and javelin, respectively posting winning marks of 5'02 and 137'05. Treavor Schmelzle picked up the win in the boys javelin with a toss of 157'06, while the Bluejays also won the Thrower's relay with a time of 50.01.

Marysville was led by Joe Smith who paced his way to times of 4:34.33 and 10:29.24 to win the 1600 and 3200 meter runs, while Chloe Cudney took first in the girls long jump (15'08.25), Claire Cudney grabbed the gold in the 100 meter hurdles (16.00) and the lady Bulldogs won the Thrower's relay with a time of 59.87.

Riverside and Auburn each had three event wins on the day at the Sabetha Invitational. For the Cyclones, Andrae McGaughy led the way winning the boys 300 meter hurdles (40.30) and triple jump (41'08), while the Riverside boys also won the 4x400 meter relay (3:38.14). Auburn had Dallas Yates win the boys 200 meter dash (23.06), while Maggy Riechick won the girls 300 meter hurdles (46.27) and the lady Bulldogs also won the 4x400 meter relay (4:18.63).

Horton Charger, Trey Dishon continued to toss his way to the top as he won the shot put and discus after registering marks of 52'07.50 and 155'11.

Zach Jordening won the lone first place finish for Falls City as he posted a mark of 6'00 to win the high jump.
