Frankfort Boys & Valley Heights Girls Win Riley County Track Invite

Four Twin Valley League teams made sure to showcase their talents in track and field at the Riley County Invitational last Friday with all four bring home a multitude of Top five performances.

The Frankfort boys and Valley Heights girls led the charge as they both picked up the top team performances on the day of 11 different schools competing. It was a close win for the Wildcats as they won by a half of a point posting 95.5 points to just get past Valley Heights who took second, while Wakefield placed third. The Axtell boys took sixth and Blue Valley-Randolph boys finished eighth. There was no doubt what team won in the girl’s competition as Valley Heights posted 108.333 points, winning by 27 points over second place Wabaunsee, while the Axtell girls finished just 1.333 points out of second place taking third. Blue Valley-Randolph and Frankfort girls finished eighth and ninth, respectively.

Frankfort on the day was led by four first place finishes with three coming in the boys action as Sheldon Parthemer won the pole vault (12'00), Broderic Shirley took first in the 3200 meter run (10:24.31) and the boys won the 4x100 meter relay, while also taking fifth in the same race with another team. Parthemer added a fourth place showing in the javelin to his day, while Lance Ross placed second in both the shot put and discus and Rylen Bailey also took second in the pole vault. Other Top five performances in the field events for the Frankfort boys came by Derek Kraushaar who finished third in the shot put and discus, Jase Suther took fourth in the long jump and Brody Roberts who placed fifth in the pole vault. On the track Ryan Kraushaar grabbed fourth and fifth place showings in the 100 and 200 meter dashes, while Christian Jackson and Jacob Studer each finished fifth in the 100 meter dash and 110 meter hurdles, respectively. Also the boys 4x400 meter relay team took third place on the day.

The lady Wildcats were led by Kaci Vaughn who behind a toss of 111'00 won the javelin, while Marie Wessel too fourth in the shot put and fifth in the discus. Frankfort girl’s 4x800 meter relay notched a fifth place finish, also on the day.

Leading the way for the Mustangs of Valley Heights was eight first place performances, four each in the girls and boys competition. Kayla Smith and Shelby Vermetten helped lead the lady Mustangs as they each won a pair of events. Smith posted the fastest time in the 100 meter dash, 12.70 to claim gold, while leaping to first place in the triple jump (33'11.50), while taking third in the 200 meter dash and long jump. For Vermetten it was tosses of 37'05.25 and 119'03 that won her the shot put and discus titles on the day. Adding to the great performances of the lady Mustangs was Sidney Blackburn who earned three silver medals in the shot put, discus and javelin, while Shea Manley took second in the triple jump and Skyler Sanders took the silver in the high jump and the bronze in the pole vault. Nicole Weyer finished fourth in the 100 meter hurdles and fifth in the long jump, while the girls 4x100 meter relay team took fifth.

Senior, Elijah Smith continues to dominate on the track for Mustang boys as he won four events at the Riley County Invitational, sweeping the hurdles with times of 14.46 and 40.82 to win the 110 and 300 meter hurdles and leaping to wins in the long jump (21'11.50) and triple jump (44'05). Three other Mustangs earned silver medals in action as Adrian Pishny placed second in the 1600 and 3200 meter runs, Logan Woodyard grabbed second place in the long jump and Jarrett Griffee took second in the javelin. Woodyard added a fifth place in the triple jump to his day, while Griffee also finished third in the 400 meter dash. Harrison Blaske took home a third place for the Mustangs in the triple jump, while Anthony Edwards tied for fourth in the high jump. The 4x800 and 4x400 meter relay teams for the Mustang boys earned fourth and fifth place showings.

Four first place finishes led the Axtell Eagles on the day as they all came in the girl’s competition with Kiersten Talbot leading the charge win posting times of 2:37.79 and 5:51.82 to win the 800 and 1600 meter runs. The lady Eagles also claimed gold in the 4x800 meter relay behind a time of 10:55.07, while Mariah Deters leapt to the high jump win with a mark of 5'02. Deters added a second place finish in the 200 meter dash and fourth place showings in the long and triple jumps. Bradie Schmitz picked up a pair of Top five showings, finishing second in the 400 meter dash and fourth in the 800 meter run, while Anna Buessing placed fourth in the javelin and Chelsea Smith took fifth in the 400 meter dash. The lady Eagles 4x400 meter relay team also nabbed a third place finish.

The Axtell boys were led by a second place finish by their 4x800 meter relay team, while Colton Buessing, Brice Koch and Caleb Heiman all picked up a bronze medal in the javelin, 800 meter run and 300 meter hurdles, respectively. Heiman added a fourth place showing in the 110 meter hurdles to his way, while Jacob Meybrunn finished fourth in the 300 meter hurdles and Burke Deters took fourth in the 3200 meter run and fifth in the 1600 meter run. The boys 4x100 and 4x400 meter relay teams both picked up fourth place finishes for the Eagles.

Blue Valley went home with three first place performances on the day as Georgia Hatesohl earned the gold in the girls 100 meter hurdles (15.99) and pole vault (8'06), while also taking and fourth in the 200 meter dash and Chase Carey posted a time of 4:43.58 to win the boys 1600 meter run, while taking second in the 800 meter run. Katie Hanson and Trevor Schwerdt also picked up Top five finishes, as Hanson placed third in the girls 3200 meter run and Schwerdt earned fourth and fifth place finishes in the boys 1600 and 800 meter runs.
