Hanover, Axtell & Linn Athletes Set to Compete in 8-Man Football All-Star Games on Saturday

The annual 8-Man All-Star games are to take place Saturday, June 6th in Beloit, Kansas at Trojan field and will feature eight area players and two area coaches in the competitions.

Action gets underway on Saturday at 10:00am with the Division II game and the Division I game will follow at 1:30pm. Three Twin Valley League teams will be represented in the Division II game with athletes from Axtell and Linn, also Axtell's head coach and Blue Valley-Randolph's coach will participating in the action. While in the Division I game three Hanover Wildcats will suit up for football action. All of the area athletes will compete on the East squads from their respective Divisions.

Axtell seniors, Tyler Jones, Shane Talbot and Andrew Feldkamp are set to suit up represent Axtell football one final time on Saturday, while their head coach Eric Detweiler will be an assistant coach for the East team. The Eagles enjoyed one of their best years in football in a while as they finished 9-3 and made the 8-Man Division II Sub-State competition, making it the farthest in the playoffs they have since 2008. Jones this year was second on the team in tackles with 100, while registering four interceptions and a fumble recovery on defense and on offense had 346 yards rushing with 10 TDs, while catching 28 passes for 259 yards with two TDs. Talbot was a jack of all trades for the Eagles as he led the team in tackles with 126, led the team in receiving (665 yards and nine TDs) and handle the punt and kick return duties. Shane on defense picked off four passes, while adding to his offensive numbers with 603 yards rushing with 14 TDs. Feldkamp anchored the Eagles offensive line, helping the offense post 331 yards per game, while on defense registering 53 tackles and a blocked punt.

It was only a 4-5 record this past season for the Linn Bulldogs but seniors, Grant Cook and Chad Gross have been key parts of Linn athletics over the past years and both guys are set to be in action in the 8-Man Division II All-Star game. Cook led the team in tackles last year with 91, while picking up an interception and two fumble recoveries on defense. He also led the team in receiving TDs with 10 after catching 28 passes for 458 yards and ran for 118 yards with three TDs. Gross led the team in receiving yards with 801 yards on 37 catches with six TDs and had a rushing TD, while posting 45 tackles on defense with two interceptions, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery.

Blue Valley-Randolph Rams head coach, Matt Schreiber will lead the East Division II team this year. The Rams this past season struggled on the field going 0-9.

In the Division I game the 8-Man DI State runner-ups the Hanover Wildcats will be well represented as three guys will suit up for the East squad in the All-Star game. Hanover is coming off one strong year athletically by their boys athletics and that includes the football season in which the Wildcats finished 12-1 and State runner-ups in Division I. The trio of seniors, Andrew Bruna, Evan Zabokrtsky and Ethan Fristchi will all be at the All-Star game on Saturday. Bruna quarterback the Wildcats last year throwing for 1,906 yards on 67.2% completion percentage with 36 TDs and only six interceptions, while rushing for 813 yards and 25 TDs and caught a TD pass. Zabokrtsky was his top target as Even led the team in receiving yards and TDs with 996 yards and 20 TD catches, while rushing for TD and being a force on defense with 63 tackles, 8 sacks (led team), an interception, forced fumble, two fumble recoveries and a blocked punt. Fristchi on offense led the offensive line for an offense that post 371.2 yards per game, while on defense accounted for 54 tackles, six sacks, a forced fumble, two fumble recoveries and three blocked punts.

The eight area players and two area coaches will get back into football mode for short time on Saturday as they represent their schools and compete with several other top senior athletes in the 8-Man All-Star games in Beloit at Trojan field.
