Hiawatha & Sabetha Legion Baseball Suffer Losses in First Round of Marysville Classic

A pair of Northeast Kansas League legion baseball teams hit the diamond on Saturday in Marysville taking a part in the Marysville Classic as Hiawatha and Sabetha both were in action in the tournament.

Due to rain on Friday the tournament schedule changed and turned into a single elimination tournament and the action started on Saturday with the opening round games and both NEKL teams took opening round losses in the tournament. Hiawatha faced off against the loss Marysville and gave up a lead late to fall 8-3, while Fairbury topped Sabetha in a 3-1 nine inning pitching duel.

Tournament Host Marysville Takes Down Hiawatha in Opening Round Game

It was a six-run bottom of the sixth by the tournament host, Marysville the propelled them to the 8-3 win over Hiawatha in the Marysville Classic.

Marysville got on the board first plating a run in the bottom of the second, but Hiawatha took the lead in the top of the fifth with a pair of runs, only to see Marysville tie the game in the bottom of the frame. Things broke open in Marysville's favor in the bottom of the sixth with six runs and while Hiawatha added a run in the top of the seventh they were unable to come back in the contest.

Parker Hasenkamp led Hiawatha in the loss with a three hit game as Hiawatha had 11 hits, but also four errors. Taylor Jacobsen pitched a solid five and one-third innings for Hiawatha in the loss moving them to 1-6 on the season.

Hiawatha will be back in action on Wednesday as they travel to Frankfort for a League double header starting at 6:00pm. (The 6:00pm game will be broadcasted on 103.9 KNZA & 92.1 KMZA)

Fairbury Tops Sabetha in Opening Round of Marysville Classic

Fairbury beat Sabetha for the third time this season, this time by a 3-1 score in nine innings behind Nebraska Wesleyan signee Dalton Hinrichs. Hinrichs pitch all nine innings and struck out 13 while allowing only four free passes. While, Gaven Schumann pitched 8 and one-third innings in the duel striking out 11 while only allowing seven-hits.  

Sabetha scored first when Blake Popkess singled in Brandon Brownlee in the bottom of the second. Fairbury answered in the top of the third and the score remained 1-1 until the 9th.  Fairbury used two singles sandwiched around an error to score a pair of runs in the ninth.  Sabetha was able to put the tying runs on with two outs, but the game ended on a fly out.  Preston Bruning had two hits in his Legion debut for Sabetha.
 
Sabetha with the loss now falls to 2-11 on the season and will be back in action on Tuesday night at home against Atchison for a League double header starting at 6:00pm. (The 6:00pm game will be broadcasted on 103.9 KNZA)
