Action rolled along on the baseball diamond on Thursday night as three Northeast Kansas League teams were in action. Doniphan County hosted Atchison in the Doniphan County tournament, while Sabetha played host to non-league opponent, Silver Lake for a twin bill.
 
The Doniphan County tournament opened up with a pair of extra inning thrillers as the Doniphan County junior and senior legion teams edged Atchison to earn spots in the Championship game on Saturday in the Doniphan County tournament. In the junior's game Doniphan County pulled out the 3-2 win in extra's, while Doniphan County senior legion earned the 6-2 win over Atchison in 10 innings.
 
For Sabetha it was a pair of tough losses to Silver Lake falling 9-1 in game one at Somerset Park and just coming up short in game two for a potential comeback, falling 6-5.
 
Grand Slam in the Tenth Lifts Doniphan County to Win Over Atchison
 
The Doniphan County tournament started off with a pair of thrilling matchups in both the senior and junior legion competitions in Wathena, as Atchison and Doniphan County squared off.
 
After taking the lead at 2-1 Doniphan County held that margin after five innings but Atchison tied it up at 2-2 and forced extra innings in the senior legion affair. After a few scoreless frames between the two teams Atchison had to make a pitching change and Chase Behler came in for Cole Siebenmorgan and Doniphan County took advantage loading the bases and then Nathan Gaarder blasted a grand slam to give Doniphan County a 6-2 lead in the top of the 10th. Gaarder finished off the game on the mound in the bottom of the 10th to lift Doniphan County to the 6-2 win and move them into the Championship game of the tournament on Saturday, while Atchison will play for third.
 
Gaarder not only had winning hit with the grand slam but he pitched all 10 innings for the win, surrendering two runs on five hits, three walks and struck out 17. Siebenmorgan went nine innings giving up two unearned runs on three hits and struck out seven, while Behler took the loss.
 
With the loss Atchison fell to 3-6 on the season, while Doniphan County improved to 8-2. Doniphan County will play the winner of the Silver Lake vs. Falls City game Friday night for the Championship on Saturday at 7:30pm, while Atchison will play the loser for third place at 2:30pm.
 
In the junior legion portion of the tournament, Doniphan County picked up the 3-2 win over Atchison in extra innings, improving to 9-1 on the season and will play for the junior legion Championship of the tournament on Saturday at 5:00pm against the winner of McLouth vs. Falls City who play Friday night, while Atchison will play for third against the loser at noon on Saturday.
 
Sabetha Suffers a Pair of Non-League Losses to Silver Lake
 
Sabetha welcomed Silver Lake to Somerset Park on Thursday night for a non-league double header and it was Silver Lake heading home with a pair of wins topping Sabetha 9-1 and 6-5.
 
Silver Lake broke the scoreless tie in game one by platting three runs in the fifth and after both teams traded runs in the sixth, Silver Lake broke the game open by scoring five runs in the seventh for the final margin, 9-1.  Sabetha in the loss was led by Kaid Allen and Zach Burger who each had two hits.
 
In game two Silver Lake led 5-0 after four and half innings, but Sabetha didn't go way quietly coming up with a late rally in the game. Sabetha scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth to trail 5-4.  Silver Lake scored an insurance run in the seventh and Sabetha was able to match the run and had the tying run at third and winning run at second but strand both falling 6-5.
 
Sabetha stranded 22 runners between the two games, leaving 12 runners on in game one and 10 in game two.
 
With the losses Sabetha falls to 4-13 on the year and will be in action next on Tuesday when they host Oskaloosa in a DH beginning at 6:00. (catch the 6:00pm game on 103.9 KNZA) Sabetha's game Sunday with Leavenworth Ready Mix has been cancelled.
