It didn't come easy but no one thought it would but the Doniphan County AA legion team is headed back to the State tournament for the seventh time in team history after capturing the Zone one championship.

The Zone tournament started off for Doniphan County with a 9-1 five inning win over Sabetha, a game that saw Cooper Leach throw a five inning one-hit shutout and Phoenix Keller go 2-2 with a grand slam and two-run homer. That set up a matchup between Doniphan County and Seneca in a winner's bracket game with the winner moving just one win away from a spot at State and Doniphan County earned the 7-1 win behind the pitching of Nathan Gaarder who went the distance giving up just one run on three hits and three walks, while striking out 12.

After Seneca staved off elimination against Hiawatha, Doniphan County took them on again and in what proved to be a crazy marathon of a game Doniphan County came back from a 3-2 victory in 10 innings to claim the Zone one tournament championship. Jeffrey Watts highlighted the game for Doniphan County tossing all 10 innings for the win recording 10 strikeouts, while going 3-5 at the plate including the walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the tenth.

Doniphan brings a 28-3 record into the State tournament in Colby, the best mark of all eight qualifying teams and will face off in the first round against a team they saw in an elimination game last year at State in Larned (16-11). The first round gets underway on Wednesday, July 29th at 3:30pm for Doniphan County and you can listen to all the games on 103.9 KNZA and online here at mscsports.net. While, Larned only has a 16-11 record they won their Zone with a no-hitter in the championship game and they have experience at State at the legion and high school level (made 4A-DII State high school baseball tourney this past school year).

The rest of the first round has Marysville (21-9) versus Hays Monarchs (23-7) starting off the action on Wednesday at 1:00pm in the top half of the bracket with Doniphan County. In the nightcap it will be Beloit (21-3) versus Wellington (12-9-2) at 6:30pm, while Iola (25-4) will take on the host Colby (21-5) to wrap up the first round action.

With a win Doniphan County would play at 6:00pm on Thursday, July 30th against the winner of Hays Monarchs and Marysville. While a loss would put Doniphan County in the elimination game at 10:00am on Thursday against the loser of Hays Monarchs and Marysville. The games will be played at Young Memorial Field in Colby (9th & Lane St.)

All the Doniphan County AA State legion baseball games will be broadcasted on 103.9 KNZA and online here at mscsports.net (click on KNZA Play by Play Sports link under Listen Live menu tab for online stream)
