Sabetha Wins & Atchison Takes Fourth at Wamego Girls Tennis Invitational

For one area team it was a strong start to the season and for another it was another solid performance to build on early in the girls tennis season, as Sabetha and Atchison competed with three other schools at the Wamego Invitational on Thursday. 

The lady Bluejays flew high to start the tennis season as they captured first place as a team with 40 total points as all the Sabetha competitors brought home first place finishes. Wamego took second with 26 points, while Topeka high placed third, Atchison took fourth and Wabaunsee fifth. 

It was a perfect 16-0 day on the courts for the lady Bluejays of Sabetha on their way to a team first place finish. Lexi Wenger notched four commanding wins in Singles number one competition beating competitors from Atchison and Topkea by 6-0 scores and winning 6-1 over competitors from Wamego and Wabaunsee. In Singles number two action it was Courtney Plattner taking the gold for Sabetha as she had 6-1 wins over Wabaunsee and Topeka, while winning 6-2 over Atchison and a 6-4 win against Wamego. In doubles action the tandem of Nicole Brey and Jena Winkler competed in Doubles number one and breezed to a 4-0 record on the day with a 6-0 win over Wabaunsee, 6-1 win against Atchison, 6-2 victory versus Wamego and 6-3 win against the Topeka high team. Doubles number two saw another 4-0 record for Sabetha as the team of Mollie Robinson and Savanna Metzger won 6-0 over Wabaunsee and 6-1 victories over Atchison, Wamego and Topeka high. 

For Atchison it was the lady Red's second competition on the courts this season already and they took fourth place as a team, led by Stormy Knott who placed second in the Singles number one competition. Knott put together a 3-1 day on the court falling only to Plattner of Sabetha, while winning 6-2 over competitors from Wabaunsee and Topeka high and 6-4 victory against Wamego competitor. In Singles number one Celina Binkley went 1-3 on the day with her lone win coming against the competitor from Topeka high, while the tandem of Alyxus Thomas and Annika Lassen (Wamego) went 1-3 in Doubles number two action. Thomas competed with Lassen because of an injury to Brienna Dove. The team of Jade Boldridge and Olivia Wabski competed in Doubles number two action and went 0-4 on the day for Atchison. 

 

The girl’s tennis season continues for Sabetha next Thursday September 3rd at the Hayden Invite in Topeka, while Atchison on Tuesday, September 8th at the Hayden Invite.
