In Class 4A-Division II to start the season a team that has been a staple of success over the years the Holton Wildcats come into the year preseason ranked third in three different polls, the Topeka-Capital Journal, Varsity Kansas (Wichita Eagle) and Kpreps. Fellow Big Seven League team in the Jeff West Tigers are in the others to watch category in two of the three polls.

Class 3A will start the season without an area team in the Top five of any of the preseason polls, but five area teams are garnering some attention coming into the season. Twin Valley League schools, Centralia and Washington County along with Big Seven League schools, Sabetha and Nemaha Central and Northeast Kansas League team in Maur Hill are all in at least one polls others to watch category in Class 3A.

Just like 3A, Class 2-1A will start the season without any area team in the preseason rankings but a pair of TVL teams are getting looks in the others to watch category. The Troy Trojans are in the others to watch category in all three preseason polls, while Onaga is in that category in one poll.

In 8-Man Division I the Hanover Wildcats who have been a top team in 8-Man for years will start the season preseason ranked in two of the three polls, as they check in at fourth in the VarsityKansas poll and second in the Topeka-Capital Journal poll.
