JCN & Washington County to Semifinals in Class 2A, Marysville out in 3A State Volleyball
By Mike Smith

While two Kanzaland area volleyball teams are dominating the headlines in Class 1A in Hays, three other Kanzaland teams were participating in their respective class state tournament, also.

In Class 2A, two Kanzaland area teams were competing as the Washington County Tigers and Jefferson County North both found themselves vying for Class 2A state title. Tigers came into the tourney as the number one seed and cruised through the competition in pool play with a 3-0 day. Washington County downed Uniontown and Berean Academy both in straight sets (25-10, 25-6 & 25-17, 25-9, respectively). In the final game of pool play the Tigers needed three sets but defeat Ell-Saline 20-25, 25-18, 25-17, as the Tigers battled back from falling in the first set.

For the Chargers they came into the tournament as the seven seed and in the opposite pool than Washington County. The Chargers came out firing on all cylinders with a 3-0 pool play performance. JCN took care of business against Skyline and Hill City downing them both in straight sets (26-24, 25-23 & 25-20, 25-19, respectively). Like the Tigers, the Chargers had one match go to three sets as JCN needed three sets to take down Kiowa County (12-25, 25-23, 25-20).

Both JCN and Washington County won their pools and will play in the Class 2A state volleyball tournament semifinals with a chance to play for the state title. Both will play 10:00am with JCN playing Ell-Saline and Washington County playing Hill City.

The only other Kanzaland area team that made a state volleyball tourney was the Marysville Bulldogs, who entered the Class 3A state tourney as the eight seed. Bulldogs tired to battle against some tough teams just came out on the short end of the stick. Marysville loss in straight sets to Garden Plain and Hoisington (25-23, 25-19 & 28-26, 25-14, respectively). Bulldogs in their final game of pool play took the first set from Southeast of Saline 25-20, but thats all the Bulldogs would get falling in the next two sets 25-20, 25-19.
