Sabetha & Marysville Girls Tennis Players Earn Spots at State

The first postseason action of 2015-16 school year wrapped up over the weekend as spots to the State tournament were up for grabs in girls tennis action in Regionals. 

Sabetha, Marysville, Perry Lecompton and Immaculata were all represented in Class 3-2-1A competing at the Regionals hosted by Maranatha Academy. While, Atchison had girls compete in Class 4A at the Desoto Regional. While the season came to an end for many of the area competitors several Bluejays and Bulldogs earned spots at the 3-2-1A State tournament at Harmon Park Tennis Complex in Prairie Village on Friday and Saturday, October 16th and 17th. 

The Bluejays who earned second place at Regionals as a team while be sending one singles competitor and two doubles tandems to the State competition. Lexi Wenger opened Regionals with a 6-2, 6-0 win and followed that up with another 6-2, 6-0 win to get to the Semifinals, were she fell to Rachel Frese of Marysville falling 6-2, 6-1. Wenger responded to finish her day 3-1 taking third with a 6-2, 6-0 in the third place match. 

Sabetha teams of Jena Winkler and Nicole Brey and Savanna Metzger and Laura Edelman are both State bound after third and sixth place finishes at Regionals. Winkler and Brey won their opening round contest 6-0, 6-0 and followed that with a 6-3, 6-2 win to make the Semifinals. In the Semi's the Marysville team of Shelby Downard and Madison Neiberding won 6-4, 6-0 over Jena and Nicole sending them to the third place match. In the third place match Winkler and Brey won 6-1, 6-4 to finish 3-1 and third place. Metzger and Edelman won their opening round match 6-2, 6-0, but fell to Downard and Neiberding in the second round (6-2, 6-3). The tandem responded with a win in the losers bracket before falling 6-1, 6-4 in the fifth place match to finish sixth and go 2-2 on the day. 

Leading the charge for Marysville at Regionals was the tandem of Downard and Neiberding who won their first match of the day 6-1, 6-0, before beating a pair of Sabetha teams to make the finals. In the finals they faced off with a team from KC Christian and earned the 6-4, 6-2 win to go 4-0 on the day claim the Regional doubles title. The Bulldog team of Holly Holthaus and Avery Williams are also headed to State after finishing fourth going 2-2 on the day and fell to Winkler and Brey in the third place match. 

In singles action, Rachel Frese is headed to State for Marysville after finishing second place in Regionals with a 3-1 record. She opened Regionals with a 6-0, 6-0 win and followed that with a 6-2, 6-2 win to make the Semifinals were she battled Wenger of Sabetha to get to the championship match. In the Championship contest Frese fell 6-2, 6-0 to a competitor from KC Christian. 

The State tournament will be Friday and Saturday, October 16th and 17th in Prairie Village at Harmon Park Tennis Complex and be hosted by KC Christian.
