Troy Falls One Play Short of Class 2-1A State Title
By Jonny Kane

The Troy Trojans found themselves in prime position to close the 2015 season on a high note Saturday afternoon.

With 3:17 left in the fourth quarter, Troy junior quarterback Reid Greaser found junior receiver Cuttar Huss on a 30-yard touchdown to pull within one of Phillipsburg, 30-29, with a point after attempt looming.

The Trojans already had a kick nearly blocked early in the ballgame, so the decision was made to go for two and the win, which Troy often has no trouble with.

Greaser took the snap, rolled to his right, and threw into the end zone for senior receiver Chris Winkel.

The pass sailed over Winkel’s head, and the Phillipsburg Panthers went on to claim the Class 2-1A State Championship with a 30-29 win on a blistering, windy day at Fort Hays State University in Hays, Kansas.

Troy opened up the ballgame clicking on all cylinders holding down the Panthers offense, which came in averaging 300 yards on the ground.

A forced a three-and-out on their first defensive possession gave the Trojans the ball with a short field, but the offense couldn’t generate a score turning it back over to the Panthers.

Tyler Franken made the first big play of the afternoon sacking Panthers freshman quarterback Trey Sides in the end zone on their second offense possession for a safety, giving the Trojans a 2-0 lead with 7:50 left in the first quarter.

After another stop on defense, the Trojan offense found the end zone for the first time as Greaser connected with Huss from 45 yards out to make it a nine point game as Alex Martinez tacked on the extra point.

The two teams traded scores the rest of the first half with Winkel scoring the other Troy touchdown on a 56-yard catch and run. For the Panthers, sophomore running back Kirk Coomes added both Phillipsburg scores on seven and 54-yard runs as Troy led at the half 17-16.

Phillipsburg wasted no time taking the lead out of the break as Coomes found pay dirt for the third time in the game on a 62-yard rush, but a failed two-point conversion made it just 22-17 with 7:56 left in the third.

Troy responded right back with a Winkel three-yard touchdown reception to take a one point lead with 4:13 remaining in the third, but Phillipsburg came right back with a four-yard run from Coomes to give the Panthers the lead for good.

Troy had a chance to get the ball back late after the failed two-point try in the final minutes, but an encroachment penalty allowed the Panthers to run out the clock.

Reid Greaser had a big day through the air throwing for 298 yards on 17 completions and four touchdowns, while Cuttar Huss and Chris Winkel each compiled over 120 yards receiving and two touchdowns each.

Saturday marked the final game for seven Troy seniors: Chris Winkel, Cadence King, Taylor Scherer, Ben Wardlow, Tucker Morris, Preston Robinson, and Luke Smith, who were all key parts to the success of the Trojans on the field.

The Trojans finished the season with a 10-2 record, while earning District, Regional, Sectional, and Sub-State Championships.
